..Title Honoring the Philadelphia Flag Day Association on the occasion of their 58th observation of Flag Day and the 223rd Anniversary of Flag Day. ..Body WHEREAS, On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the Flag Day Resolution in Philadelphia; and WHEREAS, The Flag Resolution called for a star and a stripe for each state, making 13 of both since there were, at that time, 13 states forged from the 13 colonies; and WHEREAS, The colors of the flag, red, white and blue, are explained as red for valor, white for hope and blue, the color of heaven for reverence to God, loyalty, sincerity, justice and truth; and WHEREAS, The star symbolizes dominion and sovereignty and the constellation of stars within the union, one star for each state, is emblematic of our Federal Constitution, which reserves to the states their individual sovereignty, except as to rights delegated by them to the Federal government; and WHEREAS, The flag was first carried in battle at Brandywine on September 11, 1777 and has since come to symbolize our nation and its diverse peoples; and WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Flag Day Association honors the flag each year on June 14, Flag Day, in tribute to those who have fallen in battle and to those who have served and continue to serve this great nation; now therefore RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes the good efforts of the Philadelphia Flag Day Association and encourages all Philadelphians to observe Flag Day by displaying the flag outside their homes and places of business and by attending the observances of the 223rd Anniversary of Flag Day at the Betsy Ross House. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Judge William Lederer, President of the Philadelphia Flag Day Association, in recognition of this organization's efforts to keep alive the spirit of patriotism inspired by our nation's flag. ..End
