..Title Honoring the memory of Police Officer Daniel Faulkner, murdered in the line of duty, on the 20th Anniversary of his death. ..Body WHEREAS, On December 9, 1981 at approximately 3:55 AM, Police Officer Daniel Faulkner stopped a vehicle to investigate a traffic violation near the southeast corner of Locust Street near 13th. After calling for a police wagon to transport the operator and while in the course of handcuffing him, Officer Faulkner was shot in the back by another person who was standing across the street; and WHEREAS, Officer Faulkner, mortally wounded, still found the strength and fortitude to turn and shoot his attacker in the chest. Wounded, his attacker stood over Officer Faulkner and shot him four more times at close range, murdering him; and WHEREAS, At the time of his death, Danny Faulkner was 25 years old. Despite his youth, he was already a veteran of the United States Army, a decorated five-year veteran of the Police Department, and a law student, pursuing a career in criminal justice. He was also a loving son and brother and devoted husband; and WHEREAS, The image and actions of Police Officer Faulkner have come to represent all police and their devotion to duty and he is an icon of all officers who gave their lives in the line of duty; and WHEREAS, In memory of Daniel Faulkner, thousands of dollars have been raised for the Daniel Faulkner Educational Grant Fund, established in May 2000 that provides financial assistance for students whose parents have been murdered or incapacitated by a violent crime. In death, Danny Faulkner continues to serve the citizens of Philadelphia; now therefore RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor the memory of Officer Daniel Faulkner on this, the 20th anniversary of his death, and dedicate this plaque at the site where he was slain so that all who pass by will remember Danny Faulkner's devotion to duty and the fact that he gave his life making the City of Philadelphia safe for all its citizens. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to his widow, Maureen Faulkner, as a sign of this body's respect and gratitude for the ultimate sacrifice that Officer Faulkner made in pursuit of justice and on behalf of all the citizens of this City. ..End
