..Title Honoring Tom Joyner, Sr. ..Body WHEREAS, Mr. Tom Joyner was raised in Tuskegee, Alabama, graduated from Tuskegee University, began his broadcasting career in Montgomery, Alabama, and from that day, has never looked back. He made broadcasting news in the mid-1980's by accepting simultaneous positions as "morning drive man" at a Dallas radio station and "afternoon drive man" at a station in Chicago. He flew between the two cities every day: thus the name "Fly Jock." He also earned national recognition and seven million frequent flier miles; and WHEREAS, Mr. Joyner has never been content to be a radio personality only. He has instead used his fame and high recognition to make the world, and especially the African American Community, better for all citizens. He has created BlackAmericaWeb.com to promote interaction among African Americans, and his Tom Joyner Foundation has raised more than $12 million in just five years for scholarships at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He also sponsors a city-to-city Sky Show and requires that each attendee bring proof of voter registration or register at the door; and WHEREAS, For the excellence of his work, Tom Joyner has been honored as a Radio Hall of Famer and with four Billboard Magazine Best Urban Contemporary Air Personality awards, just to name a few. He was named Impact's Best DJ of the Year so many times that they finally renamed it the Tom Joyner Award. The fact is that this man from Tuskegee has made the world a better place, and we are honored to have him as a guest in our City; now therefore RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor and commend Mr. Tom Joyner, Sr. for his many good works all around this country. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Tom Joyner, Sr. as evidence of the deep admiration and sincere respect of this legislative body. ..End
