..Title Recognizing September 21st 2009, as Alzheimer's Awareness Day in the City of Philadelphia. ..Body WHEREAS, It is estimated that 5.3 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, and as many as 26,000 Philadelphians suffer from this debilitating ailment; and WHEREAS, Every 70 seconds another American is diagnosed with Alzheimer's; and WHEREAS, The cost to treat Alzheimer's suffers last year topped 148 Billion dollars in the United States; and WHEREAS, Alzheimer's is a devastating disease, which frequently goes undiagnosed, and causes incredible emotional strain on victims and their families; and WHEREAS, September 21st is World Alzheimer's Day and Alzheimer's support groups around the world hold press conferences, fundraisers, lectures and walks to raise awareness and build momentum towards effective treatments and a cure; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED THAT, The Philadelphia City Council recognizes September 21, 2009 as Alzheimer's Awareness Day in The City of Philadelphia. We applaud the work of Alzheimer advocates in this City and around the world, and fully support you in your struggle for recognition, treatment, and an eventual cure for Alzheimer's disease; and FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Alzheimer's Association of Philadelphia as a sincere expression of City Council's appreciation and gratitude for their strong advocacy of behalf of Alzheimer's victims. ..End
