..Title Honoring and recognizing Danny "Swift" García for his spectacular achievement of winning the World Boxing Council Light Welterweight Title. ..Body WHEREAS, Danny García is a Puerto Rican-American professional boxer and the current World Boxing Council (WBC) Light Welterweight Champion, at times referred to as the junior welterweight or super lightweight undisputed champion of the world; and WHEREAS, On Saturday, March 24, 2012, Danny "Swift" García won by unanimous decision and with it, the vacant WBC Light Welterweight Title, by besting his opponent who gave it his all, but his tired body was no match for the youth and power of our champion Danny "Swift" García; and WHEREAS, García was born in the North Philadelphia neighborhood of Juaniata to a mother from Bayamón, Puerto Rico and his trainer, Ángel García originally from Naguabo, Puerto Rico, who was a former boxer himself; and WHEREAS, It was García's father who introduced him to boxing, taking him to Philadelphia's Harrowgate Boxing Club as soon as he was ten years old, the minimum age allowed by local law, for a minor to train. Ever since, García Sr. has since been his primary boxing coach; and WHEREAS, Danny "Swift" García's professional record stands at twenty-three wins, zero losses and fourteen knock-outs (KOs) and amateur record boasts of over one hundred wins, and being a U.S. National Amateur Boxing Champion; and WHEREAS, Having been raised in the City with the second largest Puerto Rican community in the United States, García identified with his heritage, stating early in his career the desire to become the "next great Puerto Rican fighter" and today he is Philadelphia's first Latino World Champion; now therefore RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby honor and recognize Danny "Swift" García as a Philadelphia champion for his spectacular achievement of winning the WBC Light Welterweight Title. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Danny "Swift" García as evidence of the admiration and sincere sentiments of this legislative body. ..End
