..Title Honoring the Memory of Philadelphia Fire Captain Michael R. Goodwin, Sr. ..Body WHEREAS, Michael R. Goodwin was a veteran firefighter with over 29 years of service. He was appointed a firefighter on September 3, 1983 and served at Engine 51 and Engine 45. At Engine 6, he was promoted to Lieutenant; and WHEREAS, As Lieutenant and Captain, he served at Engine 58, Engine 14, Engine 3, Engine 7, Engine 49, Division 1B and most recently, Ladder 27; and WHEREAS, Michael R. Goodwin served in the United States Navy from 1977-1980 and served as an E4 aboard the U.S. America; and WHEREAS, His superiors and colleagues considered him to be a firefighter worthy of respect, admiration and emulation. He was awarded many commendations while serving the citizens of Philadelphia, saving lives of victims in burning buildings; and WHEREAS, On Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 5:34 p.m., a 3 alarm blaze broke out at a fabric store near the intersection of Fitzwater and South Fourth Street in Queen Village; and WHEREAS, At approximately 5:34 p.m., as Ladder Company 27 fought to extinguish the flames, Captain Michael R. Goodwin, sustained fatal injuries; and WHEREAS, Philadelphia firefighters are in the front lines of defense against a wide variety of disasters that threaten life and property; and WHEREAS, Fire Captain Michael R. Goodwin will be remembered for his great love of his work, and the pride he took in performing beyond the call of duty. He will be remembered for his generous nature. He will be remembered, always, as a hero; now therefore RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby respectfully join the Philadelphia Fire Department, family and friends of Philadelphia Fire Captain R. Goodwin, Sr. in mourning his death and honoring his memory. To his wife, Kelly, his children, Dorothy and Michael, and his mother, Elizabeth, we extend our heartfelt sympathy and our prayers of comfort. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Philadelphia Firefighter Captain Michael R. Goodwin as evidence of the profound condolences of this legislative body. ..End
