..Title Also naming Leidy Avenue between Girard Avenue and 42nd Street "Dr. Joseph Ginyard Way" to honor the memory of Dr. Joseph Ginyard and to recognize his life and memorialize his lasting legacy. ..Body WHEREAS, Joseph Ginyard was born September 18, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA, the third of six children of Mortie Ginyard and Bessie Ginyard; and WHEREAS, After graduating from Northeast High School, Dr. Ginyard joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served honorably in World War II and remained until after the Korean Conflict began; and WHEREAS, In 1948 Joseph Ginyard was united in marriage with Cecila M. Jackson. Through this union four children were brought into this world: Dr. Jo-Ann Hayward, Martin Ginyard, Elaine Barkley and Revered Phillip Ginyard; and WHEREAS, Dr. Ginyard was a faithful and committed pastor, husband, father, grandfather, mentor and civic leader; and WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Bro Joe" and often considered the "Pride of East Parkside", Dr. Ginyard created Calvary Gospel Chapel at 4128 W. Girard Avenue with fellow Elders Dr. B. Sam Hart and Danny Stone; and WHEREAS, Dr. Ginyard set out to see positive change in the most dismal of circumstance and his greatest concern was helping young people overcome their personal obstacles by challenging them to become role models with their family, church, school, neighborhood and the world; and WHEREAS, Over the course of his life Dr. Ginyard received many awards for his lifelong dedication to service including; the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Award, Urban Hero Award, The Ed Rendell Doer Award, the Youth Services, Inc. Award and President Barak Obama's Life Time Achievement for Community Service Award; and WHEREAS, In 2012, Dr. Ginyard and the surviving Montford Point Marines were honored with the Congressional Gold Medal; and WHEREAS, According to his family, "His greatest achievement was in guiding and instructing young people to be godly, responsible and productive human beings"; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Leidy Avenue between Girard Avenue and 42nd Street is also named "Dr. Joseph Ginyard Way" to honor the memory of Dr. Joseph Ginyard and to recognize his life and memorialize his lasting legacy. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the congregation of Calvary Gospel Chapel as evidence of the sincere respect of this legislative body. ..End
