..Title Recognizing the Northwest Victim Services for Hosting the First One Step 5K Walk for Safer Neighborhoods. ..Body WHEREAS, The nonprofit, Northwest Victim Services ("NVS"), will host their first 5K walk on Saturday, April 25th from 9:00am to 12:00pm. This event will help raise money and bring awareness and support for safer neighborhoods and victims' rights; and WHEREAS, Founded in 1981 by the Community Safety Program, NVS was the first community based victim service program in Philadelphia. Since then, six additional community based victim service agencies in Philadelphia have been modeled after NVS; and WHEREAS, Over the past 30 years, NVS has provided free support services to thousands of crime victims and served as a leading example for non profits and City Agencies; and WHEREAS, NVS aims to meet the emotional and financial needs of crime victims while serving as a liaison between community members and law enforcement; and WHEREAS, In fiscal year 2013, NVS serviced 3,179 crime victims in the 5th, 14th, 35th, and 39th police districts at no cost; and WHEREAS, NVS works closely with the District Attorney's office, the police department and area community groups to increase safety in our neighborhoods and spread awareness of their services; and WHEREAS, The first annual One Step Walk, hosted by NVS, will raise much needed funds to support victims of crime in North and Northwest Philadelphia; now therefore, RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby recognizes and honors the Northwest Victim Services for hosting the One Step 5K Walk. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy be presented to Northwest Victim Services and Executive Director, Melany Nelson as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body. ..End
