..Title Honoring and commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Philadelphia Branch of Alcoholics Anonymous for their commitment to recovery and ineffable service to the community by aiding in the recovery of thousands of Philadelphians since the inception of the branch in 1940. ..Body WHEREAS, In the United States alone, an estimated 17 million people struggle with the deadly disease of alcoholism; and WHEREAS, According to a report published by the Center for Disease Control, alcohol caused the deaths of 88,000 people a year, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ranks Pennsylvania as fourth in the number of alcohol related automobile fatalities; and WHEREAS, Alcoholics Anonymous is both essential to the recovery and wellbeing of many individuals who battle alcohol addiction, as well as to the overall public safety of the community at large. For every member that Alcoholics Anonymous assists in recovery, Philadelphia becomes a safer and better community; and WHEREAS, On March 7th 2015, in honor of 75 years of service provided by the Philadelphia branch of Alcoholics Anonymous, a ceremony was held at the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul and was attended by an estimated 1,500 people; and WHEREAS, Alcoholics Anonymous further services the City of Philadelphia by making our roads and neighborhoods safer, helping families of alcoholics regain normalcy, and creating a safe environment open to all; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby honors and recognizes the Philadelphia Branch of Alcoholics Anonymous for its continued fight against addiction and for the invaluable services provided to Philadelphians. Their devotion to fostering hope and support to alcoholics and their families is reflective of the spirit of community that makes Philadelphia the City of Brotherly Love. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to The Philadelphia Branch of Alcoholics Anonymous. We are proud to honor and recognize the efforts of Alcoholics Anonymous, and offer congratulations on 75 years of services to thousands of Philadelphians. ..End 15
