..Title Recognizing and Honoring Photographer Michael Nichols for His Award-Winning Career and Documentation of Wildlife Conservation. ..Body WHEREAS, On June 27, 2017, the Philadelphia Museum of Art will present the first major exhibition of the work of one of the world's leading photographers, Michael Nichols, in the exhibition Wild: Michael Nichols; and WHEREAS, Michael Nichols was born in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and began his career in photojournalism in 1979. Brandished with the moniker "The Mick Jagger of Photography", Nichols has published over 20 articles for National Geographic; and WHEREAS, Nichols' work has been featured in Rolling Stone, Life, Aperture, and countless other magazines and periodicals. In addition to these publications, Nichols has produced several books of his own, including a collaboration with world-famous anthropologist Jane Goodall; and WHEREAS, Nichols' travels have led him on expeditions to all corners of the globe. He documented lions in the Serengeti, photographed the world's largest trees in Redwood National Forest, and explored the Indus and Amazonian river basins. His body of work is known for capturing the true intensity of the wild, offering his audience stark confrontation with the power and fragility of some of the world's most remote locations; and WHEREAS, Nichols' lifework serves as a timely reminder that the biodiversity of our world's ecosystems must be treasured, not only for their beauty, but also for the fundamental role they play in shaping the human experience; and WHEREAS, By hosting the exhibition Wild: Michael Nichols, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is once again demonstrating its commitment to the quality of life of the citizens of Philadelphia, by providing enriching cultural and educational opportunities. Moreover, the upcoming exhibition will cultivate awareness about critical environmental issues that affect our City, state, country and planet; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize and honor photographer Michael Nichols for his award-winning career and documentation of wildlife conservation, FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Michael Nichols as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body. ..End
