..Title Recognizing 314 Action for Its Tireless Efforts Advocating for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Principles Across All Levels of Government. ..Body WHEREAS, 314 Action is a nonprofit organization founded by members of the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics ("STEM") community, grassroots supporters, and activists who believe in science; and WHEREAS, 314 Action is committed to advocating for evidence-based policy solutions to issues like climate change in Washington, D.C. and in local and state legislatures across the country; and WHEREAS, Through the engagement of their extensive network of STEM professionals, 314 Action makes scientific information more accessible to the public, elected officials, and political candidates at all levels; and WHEREAS, Members of the 314 Action Community have testified before Congress and provided policy guidance to elected officials, educating and influencing policy makers on issues like climate change and funding for basic scientific research; and WHEREAS, 314 Action's goals are to strengthen communication among the STEM Community, the public and elected officials; make science more accessible to the public; educate and advocate for and defend the integrity of science and its use; provide a voice for the STEM Community on social issues; promote the responsible use of data driven fact-based approaches in public policy; and increase public engagement with the STEM Community through media; and WHEREAS, 314 Action's STEM Principles articulate respect for the individuals conducting scientific research, a commitment to refrain from interference in scientific research conducted with public or tax-payer funding, as well as the consideration of scientific principles informing public policy and the analysis of legislation whenever appropriate; and WHEREAS, 314 Action has recruited dozens of Mayors and municipal leaders to support their STEM Principles. These Mayors represent a diverse cross-section of America including the Mayors of Philadelphia, PA; Pittsburgh, PA; Honolulu, HI; Denver, CO; Nashville, TN and Raleigh, NC; and WHEREAS, 314 Action believes that only through a unified STEM and pro-science community can we combat attacks on basic scientific understanding; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Council does hereby recognize 314 Action for its tireless effort to advocating for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics principles across all levels of government. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to 314 Action as further evidence of the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body. ..End
