..Title Remembering the 10th Anniversary of the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake which occurred in the Abruzzo Region of central Italy. ..Body WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia formed a formal Partnership with the Region of Abruzzo, Italy in 1997; and WHEREAS, The main shock of the L'Aquila earthquake occurred on April 6, 2009 at 3:32 a.m. Central European Time (CET) in the Abruzzo Region of central Italy and was rated at 5.9 on the Richter magnitude scale and 6.3 on the Moment magnitude scale; and WHEREAS, The earthquake was felt throughout central Italy; 308 people are known to have died and approximately 1,500 people were injured making this the deadliest earthquake to hit Italy since the 1980 Irpinia earthquake; and WHEREAS, There have been several thousand foreshocks and aftershocks since December 2008, more than thirty of which had a Richter magnitude of greater than 3.5; and WHEREAS, The earthquake caused damage to between 3,000 and 11,000 buildings in the medieval city of L'Aquila and heavily damaged others including; the apse of the Basilica of Saint Bernardino of Siena; almost the entire dome of the 18th-Century Church of Anime Sante; the 13th-Century Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio, which collapsed from the transept to the back of the church; Porta Napoli, the oldest gate to the city which was destroyed and the third floor of Forte Spagnolo as only some examples; and WHEREAS, In 1997 The City of Philadelphia formed a formal Partnership with the Abruzzo Region of Italy. The citizens of Philadelphia embrace this partnership and continue to remember and salute the people of the city of L'Aquila and those affected by this tragic event; now therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we remember the 10th Anniversary of the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake which occurred in the Abruzzo Region of central Italy. ..End
