..Title Recognizing and Honoring David Shaw for all the work he has done for the Blind and Disabled Community. ..Body WHEREAS, David Lee Shaw was born in Macon Georgia, and moved to West Philadelphia over 35 years ago. At the age of 13, Mr. Shaw had a sunstroke while picking cotton and lost his vision; and WHEREAS, Family and community are important to Mr. Shaw. He raised 15 children over the years who produced wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren. He attends Unity Baptist Church in South Philadelphia where he is a Senior Deacon; and WHEREAS, At 85 years of age, Mr. Shaw is still very active in fighting for equal rights for the Blind and Disabled. With the assistance of Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, he has been able to attend the National Convention for the past 15 years and before that, many more years with the help of Lucien E. Blackwell. Additionally, he has attended State Conventions in Harrisburg that have worked to implement new laws and ideas for the Blind and Disabled Community; and WHEREAS, When Mr. Shaw goes to Harrisburg he represents his delegation from Philadelphia, The John F. Kennedy Chapter for the Blind. Mr. Shaw became President in 1993 and served as President for 10 years. The 3-day convention hosts over 1500 blind and disabled people from all over the country. Everyone comes together and brings ideas to better enhance the community; and WHEREAS, These conventions have inspired more people who are visually impaired to go out and vote. They even gave a demonstration of the new voting machines that are here in Philadelphia. The conventions play an important role in educating the community on new bills and laws that are being considered and what can be done to assist them; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes and honors David Shaw for all the work he has done for the Blind and Disabled Community. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to David Shaw as a sincere expression of the Council of the City of Philadelphia's gratitude, admiration and recognition. ..End
