..Title Recognizing and honoring legendary jazz host Bob Perkins for his accomplishments and contributions to radio and print media in Philadelphia. ..Body WHEREAS, Bob Perkins has become a fixture of the Philadelphia jazz community during his more than 40 years of service in radio; and WHEREAS, The Philadelphia native - born December 6, 1933 - grew up in a two-bedroom rowhome near 19th and Reed Street; and WHEREAS, Perkins inherited a love for radio from his father, whom he called his "radio school"; and WHEREAS, Perkins got his first break in the radio business with an on-air opportunity in Detroit in 1964 before returning to Philadelphia in 1969 to work at rhythm-and-blues station WDAS; and WHEREAS, Perkins worked at WDAS for 19 years before joining WRTI in 1997; and WHEREAS, Over the years, Perkins' distinct and warm style attracted a dedicated following of jazz listeners near and far; and WHEREAS, Perkins is commonly known as "BP with the GM," meaning, "Bob Perkins with the Good Music"; and WHEREAS, Outside of radio, Perkins contributes to publications such as the Philadelphia Tribune and hosts local jazz festivals and clubs; and WHEREAS, For his outstanding career and contributions to the local jazz community, Perkins was inducted into the Philadelphia Walk of Fame in 2016; and WHEREAS, Perkins recently celebrated his 87th birthday and continues to work on air at WRTI Monday through Thursday from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.; and WHEREAS, The lifelong, towering contributions of Bob Perkins to the jazz community have cemented him as an icon, and the citizens of Philadelphia thank him for his steadfast service to his listeners and community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED BY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it herby recognizes and honors legendary jazz host Bob Perkins for his accomplishments and contributions to radio and print media in Philadelphia. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Bob Perkins, further evidencing the since admiration and respect of this legislative body. ..End
