..Title Recognizing and congratulating Marcia L. Fudge on her confirmation to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development. ..Body WHEREAS, On March 10, 2021, The U.S. Senate voted to confirm Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge as the 18th Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In her new role, Secretary Fudge will lead the Offices of Housing, Community Planning and Development, Federal Housing Administration, Public and Indian Housing, Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, Policy Development and Research, Field Policy and Management, Government National Mortgage Association, Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes, and Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships; and WHEREAS, As a Congresswoman, Fudge served on the Committee on House Administration, the House Committee on Agriculture, and the House Committee on Education and Labor. She was the Chair of the Committee on House Administration's Subcommittee on Elections and Chair of the Committee on Agriculture's Subcommittee on Nutrition, Oversight and Department Operations. She also served on the Subcommittees on Conservation and Forestry (Agriculture), Civil Rights and Human Services (Education & Labor) and Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions (Education & Labor); and WHEREAS, In the 115th Congress, Congresswoman Fudge served on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce Subcommittees on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education and on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions. She also served as Ranking Member on the House Committee on Agriculture Subcommittee on Conservation and Forestry and a member on the Subcommittee on Nutrition. She was a member of several Congressional Caucuses and past Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus; and WHEREAS, Secretary Fudge hails from Ohio and has served the people for more than three decades. She began her journey at the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office where she worked as the Director of the Prosecutor's Office, Director of the Budget Commission, and Director of the Personal Property Tax Department. Between 1999 and 2000, she worked as a staff member for Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones, who she later replaced after her death. Fudge was the first Black and female mayor of Warrensville Heights, Ohio. Fudge served in this role from 2000 to 2008. Then, Fudge was elected to the 110th Congress in November of 2008. She was subsequently re-elected in seven Congresses; and WHEREAS, Fudge graduated from Ohio State University in 1975 with a Bachelors in Business. She then graduated from Cleveland Marshall College of Law in 1983 at Cleveland State University; and WHEREAS, Fudge's past leadership roles include serving as a National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She served in this role from 1996 to 2000. Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913 by 22 collegiate women at Howard University with a mission to promote academic excellence to those in need. Fudge remains an active member in the Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter; and WHEREAS, Fudge has dedicated her life to being a public servant. She upholds this with her daily affirmation "to do the people's work." She has earned an outstanding reputation among her colleagues in Ohio and Washington D.C. as being an insightful leader and legislator. She is well-known for her work ethic, problem-solving approach, and her ability to build collaborative relationships; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes and congratulates Marcia L. Fudge on her confirmation to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Marcia L. Fudge as evidence of the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body. ..End
