..Title Also naming the 2300 block of Ridge Avenue between 23rd Street and 24th Street, as "Harold Malcom McCoy Way" to honor the life and entrepreneurship of Harold Malcolm McCoy and his dedication to the North Philadelphia-Ridge Avenue Commercial Corridor. ..Body WHEREAS, Mr. McCoy resided at 1816 N. Taney Street where he lived with his wife and first born child; and WHEREAS, Mr. McCoy was active in his community, serving as an unofficial Block Captain, organizing Saturday morning street cleanings, even knocking on neighbors' doors to have them remove their cars beforehand, as well as overseeing upkeep and beautification of the community garden at the corner of Taney Street and Montgomery Avenue; and WHEREAS, Mr. McCoy was also an intrepid entrepreneur, starting and successfully running a host of businesses along Ridge Avenue, including Steak Shop Island, a dump truck company and a tire repair business; and WHEREAS, Mr. McCoy used his keen business sense to open Malcom's restaurant, which began as a BBQ pit selling chicken and ribs with side dishes out of a small trailer, to drum up business outside his fledgling repair shop; and WHEREAS, Mr. McCoy later served as a business association president, a role in which he was able to help other minorities in his neighborhood obtain property and develop their own businesses, and he ultimately created and presided over Ridge on the Rise (ROTR) CDC, an organization dedicated to development and revitalization along Ridge Avenue; and WHEREAS, Mr. McCoy's legacy lives on through the continued work of ROTR and the now- thriving family business, McCoy and Sons Auto Service Center, and he will be lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and neighbors for his devotion to his community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the 2300 block of Ridge Avenue between 23rd Street and 24th Street, also be named "Harold Malcom McCoy Way" to honor the life and entrepreneurship of Harold Malcolm McCoy and his dedication to the North Philadelphia- Ridge Avenue Commercial Corridor. ..End
