..Title Honoring American Legion Lincoln Post 89 for its service to the veterans of South Philadelphia and the broader community, and for making history as the first American Legion Post in Philadelphia for African Americans. ..Body WHEREAS, The American Legion Lincoln Post 89 made history as the first American Legion Post in Philadelphia for African Americans and it is believed to be the first American Legion post in Pennsylvania for African Americans; and WHEREAS, The American Legion has a long history of supporting and embracing all current and former members of the military and continues to endeavor to help them transition into their communities. Founded in 1919, it is the largest wartime veterans' service organization with nearly 2 million members, and more than 12,000 posts in communities throughout America; and WHEREAS, The Lincoln Post 89 headquarters has been located at 1940-42 Federal Street, in South Philadelphia, since 1943. It is a pillar within the community, providing a gathering place and community hub for veterans of all wars. It also provides valuable services to veterans. The post assists veterans in applying for military benefits and other support services. They provide a safe haven for those struggling with issues commonly afflicting veterans; and WHEREAS, Lincoln Post 89 also helps the community with summer food programs, feeding the less fortunate. They also help children and youth of South Philadelphia by supporting events such as back to school fundraising, holiday activities, and historical lessons. The post also supports election administration in Philadelphia by serving as a polling place in the 36th Ward; and WHEREAS, Lincoln Post 89's commitment to service helps to strengthen the fabric of the South Philadelphia community and ensures that veterans are honored, supported, and connected to their community; now, therefore be it RESOLVED, This Council hereby honors American Legion Lincoln Post 89 for its service to the veterans of South Philadelphia and the broader community, and for making history as the first American Legion Post in Philadelphia for African Americans. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the leadership of the American Legion Lincoln Post 89, further evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body. ..End
