..Title Honoring NBC10 Philadelphia's Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz on the occasion of his upcoming retirement and recognizing his twenty-seven years with the First Alert Weather Team and his forty-two year career on television reporting the weather. ..Body WHEREAS, Glenn Schwartz was born and raised in Philadelphia and graduated from Central High School before earning a degree in meteorology from Penn State University in 1972; and WHEREAS, Mr. Schwartz began his career as a meteorologist at AccuWeather, before moving onto the National Hurricane Center, and making his debut in front of the camera in Atlanta in 1982; and WHEREAS, Mr. Schwartz was one of The Weather Channel's first on-site hurricane reporters. A colleague at WNYW-TV in New York City saw Mr. Schwartz issuing a report while being buffeted by hurricane force winds and gave him the nickname 'Hurricane'; and WHEREAS, Glenn 'Hurricane' Schwartz came home to Philadelphia in 1995 as meteorologist for WCAU Philadelphia. Nearly every day for the last twenty-seven years, the people of Philadelphia have been able to put our trust in 'Hurricane' Schwartz - and his bowties - to keep the us informed and alert during hazardous weather events; and WHEREAS, Glen Schwartz's coverage of historical weather events ranged from the Blizzard of '96 to Hurricane Sandy to the recent historic flooding brought by Hurricane Ida; and WHEREAS, In recognition of Mr. Schwartz's tenure at NBC10, he was inducted into the Philadelphia Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame in 2010; and WHEREAS, When he's not reporting on the weather, Glenn enjoys racquetball, softball and swimming. In 2020, Glenn published his first fiction novel, "The Weathermaker." He is also the co-author of award winning "Philadelphia Area Weather Book." Glenn is also the only meteorologist in the area that blogs about the weather; and WHEREAS, Glen Schwartz is also passionate about heart health and education. In 2012, Glenn received double bypass heart surgery. The story of how he recognized the symptoms and sought medical attention has been credited with saving the lives of several viewers; and WHEREAS, Upon his retirement from NBC10 in May, Glenn 'Hurricane' Schwartz will be a sorely missed presence on the daily news. We at City Council and in the City look forward to hearing from him in retirement, whether through his writings, public speaking, or radio, applying his vast experience as a meteorologist to raise awareness of our shared climate crisis and actions we can take to minimize its tragic impacts; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF PHILADELPHIA, Does hereby honor NBC10 Philadelphia's Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz on the occasion of his upcoming retirement and recognizing his twenty-seven years with the First Alert Weather Team and his forty-two year career on television reporting the weather. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Glenn Schwartz, further evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body. ..End
