..Title Recognizing the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., on the occasion of its 100th Anniversary. ..Body WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is a global fraternal organization of over 160,000 men united by the common purpose of achievement in every field of human endeavor; and WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi and the City of Philadelphia share a special bond in that the fraternity's International Headquarters is located in North Philadelphia, and, historically, the Greater Philadelphia region has been home to hundreds of members in undergraduate and alumni chapters; and WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi was established on May 25, 1922; it was the third alumni chapter established on the eastern seaboard, while Philadelphia became the second city that was home to both a Greek letter and an alumni chapter; and WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Alumni Chapter was inspired by John Milton Lee, one of the original founders, who was living in Philadelphia following his honorable discharge from the military; and WHEREAS, Lee, along with brothers Harry Ashley, Felton L. Brown, Bernard C. Calloway, George W. Clinton, Benjamin H. Dillard, Norman L. Glenn, William E. Griffin, Alvin Sloane Hawk, Edward H. Smyrl, and Cornelius Wooding were the founding members of the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter; and WHEREAS, Among the charter members of the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter, seven of them - Brothers Brown, Calloway, Clinton, Glenn, Hawk, Smyrl, and Wooding - were also graduates of Temple University and charter members of the Lambda Chapter on that campus; and WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, whose membership typically hovers around 300 members, has long been an active leader in Philadelphia, hosting Grand Chapter meetings in 1920, 1930, 1959, 1995 and 2019; and WHEREAS, Streets, schools, community centers, and other landmarks throughout Philadelphia are named for Kappa men, and the results of their community service, social welfare and educational advocacy can be felt in nearly every neighborhood in Philadelphia. Now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it does hereby recognize the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. on the occasion of its 100th Anniversary. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to representatives of the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body. ..End
