..Title Honoring the life and legacy of Fred Shabel, for his enduring dedication to the city of Philadelphia as a coach, businessman, and civic leader. ..Body WHEREAS, Shabel was a dedicated collegiate basketball coach. He was at the helm of the University of Connecticut program from 1963 - 1967, enjoying a .713 win percentage. After that, he went on to become the athletic director at UConn for a short period before relocating to Philadelphia in 1967, to become the Athletic Director of the University of Pennsylvania; and WHEREAS, During his tenure at the University of Pennsylvania, the Quakers were nationally ranked. Under Shabel's tutelage, women's athletics at UPenn became varsity sports, and many of their facilities were upgraded to more modern standards; and WHEREAS, After eight years as Athletic Director, Shabel became the Vice President for the University of Pennsylvania "which included planning, construction, security, publications, buildings and grounds, and auxiliary services" for the University; and WHEREAS, In 1980, Shabel took a position with Spectacor, now Comcast-Spectacor. He ultimately rose to be Vice Chairman of the company; and WHEREAS, He served on the Boards of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, The Franklin Institute, and Philadelphia Sports Congress, among others, showing a true dedication to the City's sporting, sciences, and arts communities, and for the wellbeing of Philadelphia's businesses, small and large; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor the life and legacy of Fred Shabel, for his enduring dedication to the city of Philadelphia as a coach, businessman, and civic leader. FURTHER RESOLVED, That an engrossed copy be presented to the family of Fred Shabel, further evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body. ..End
