..Title Proclaiming September 16, 2023 as Masha Amini Day in the City of Philadelphia to Commemorate and Recognize the one-year anniversary of her death in custody after being detained by Iranian Morality Police. ..Body WHEREAS, Masha Amini's unjust treatment became a catalyst for the first-ever female-led revolution, where women demanded nothing less than basic human rights and equality between all men and women; and WHEREAS, The Murder of 22-year-old Mahsa "Jina" Amini by the Iranian Islamic Republic's Morality Police on September 16th, 2022, sparked a movement in Iran which became known as "Woman Life Freedom" and soon turn into a revolution; and WHEREAS, "Woman Life Freedom" became a global movement, inspiring people around the world to stand up alongside of courageous women of Iran, demanding their basic human rights and gender equality; and WHEREAS, The name of Masha Amini became the symbol of this women-led uprising; and WHEREAS, Despite the brutal crackdown of protests and execution of peaceful protesters after sham trials, Iranian women continue their call for freedom and courageously display their resistance through civic defiance and refusing to follow barbaric laws that undermine their humanity; and WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia is home to a large Iranian American population, contributing to its diverse background, societal, cultural, and economic well-being; and WHEREAS, Iranian Americans have been organizing rallies in Philadelphia since September of 2022 in solidarity with their sisters and brothers in Iran in their fight for freedom; and WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia stands with Iranian women in their quest to demand basic human rights related to their choice, gender, and identity. The City of Philadelphia condemns the atrocities of the Islamic Republic against women and children; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby proclaims September 16th "Mahsa Day" to honor sacrifices of the women of Iran in their quest for freedom. ..End
