Hartley Jr., A.I.A., Preservation Committee, American Institute of Architects, Philadelphia Chapter. Erling H. Pederson, A.I.A., Old Philadelphia Development Corporation Russell Dilmore, A.I.A., Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority Gary Jones, Washington Square West Project Area Committee Richard Tyler, Historian Patricia Siemikowski, Executive Assistant to the Chairman Also: David E. Bell and Mr. Bensing to present their proposal for the restoration of 429 Vine Street SUBMISSIONS 506 South 4th Street, George Manos, contractor. Since no minute could be found in file supporting the certification of the buildings at 504 and 506 South 4th Street, the Committee asked the staff to notify the Department of Licenses and Inspections that these buildings are not certified and that the Commission has no control over alterations made to them. 114-120 Chestnut Street, S. Sherwin Rokhlis, Architect. The Committee unanimously agreed to recommend the rejection of this proposal for renovations to the Chestnut Street buildings. The architect should redo his proposal, and present another submission. The staff was directed to acquire additional photographs of the buildings in question. 2200 Walton Avenue, Holloman and Braslow, Urban Planners and Developers. The proposal, as presented, was rejected by the Committee. All existing openings must be retained. The new chimney should be eliminated and a chimney appropriate to the period should be installed. The staff will order additional photographs of the building for the file. 2027 Mt. Vernon Street, Howard Alpert, Architect. This proposal was given preliminary approval. Proper details are required before a final approval can be given. The Committee noted that the drawing of the cornices, even though it is existing, was not accurate. Finally, the map should be eliminated. 246 Christian Street, H. Murray, Contractor. The Committee recommended that the Commission ask the owner of this building to install a period storefront. If this is not feasible, the Committee will allow the alterations as proposed. 211 Catharine Street, H. Humrey, Contractor. The Committee asked for the submission of an accurately drawn elevation before agreeing to consent on the submission. ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE 2 18 November 1975 SUBMISSIONS (Cont'd) 10th Arch Street. The drawing as presented was approved. A letter from the owner stating his intention to eventually restore the entire structure is required. 416 South Second Street. The Committee recommended that the Commission not approve the

consent on the submission. ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE 2 18 November 1975 SUBMISSIONS (Cont'd) 10th Arch Street. The drawing as presented was approved. A letter from the owner stating his intention to eventually restore the entire structure is required. 416 South Second Street. The Committee recommended that the Commission not approve the proposal as submitted for the year of this building. The matter will be referred to the Advisory Board of Design for comment. 429 Vine Street. Mr. Bell and Mr. Beaming presented their plan for the renovation of this building to the Committee. After some discussion, the Committee asked the contractors to refer the architect, Stephan Klein, to the Historical Commission office for assistance in planning the proper restoration of this building. PROBLEMS 319 South American Street. The owner's request to demolish and rebuild the existing masonry walls of this building was reviewed and approved by the Committee. The existing walls are bulging and present a hazardous condition. The walls will be rebuilt with the same type and style brick and having the same size openings as the original. REHABILITATION SPECIFICATIONS 606 Spruce Street. The Committee recommends the approval of these specifications as presented. PLAQUES 220 ft. Mark's Square. This request for a plaque was denied. The storm sash and globe light should be removed. 311 Lawrence Court. Mr. Bartley agreed to inspect this building and make a report to the Committee. Mr. Levy reported the Historical Commission's directive that the Committee study further its proposal to have a second plaque issued for buildings representing a well integrated design of several periods. After some discussion, the Committee agreed to table the matter. Plans for the restoration of 228 South 9th Street were presented for a preliminary review. The Committee questioned the use of shutters on the building and objected to the design of the side addition of the building. The architect will be asked to restudy his proposal for the addition. Specifically, the Committee suggested the use of wood pilasters and columns rather than brick and the installation of lattice work in the opening under the structure. Respectfully submitted, Patricia Szmiontkouski Executive Assistant to the Chairman
