SUBMISSIONS FOR ALTERATIONS University of Pennsylvania Boat House, East River Drive, FRANCIS CAUFFMAN WILKINSON & PEPPER, Architects. Mr. D. Hughes Cauffman and Mr. Gardner Cadwalader appeared before the Architectural Committee to present their preliminary submission for renovations and additions to the University of Pennsylvania Boat House. The new additions to the structure will provide equal facilities for women members of the club. The proposed alterations include the addition of a new bay to the riverfront elevation, a second floor addition to the existing one-story portion of the building, the construction of a new exit stair and other various renovations. While the Committee agreed to recommend the approval of the proposed project, in concept, they suggested some revision of the east and west elevations. The Committee asked that the area between the two gable ends on each of these elevations be treated as a mansard. In addition, they suggested ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE 2 19 March 1980 SUBMISSIONS (Cont'd) that the four gable ends be executed in a manner similar to the East River Drive gable with its decorative wood trim. In all other respects, the Committee found the submission to be acceptable. Before a final approval is granted, a complete set of working drawings must be submitted for further review. 53 E. Logan Street, Charles Newman, Architect. Mr. Newman presented
the East River Drive gable with its decorative wood trim. In all other respects, the Committee found the submission to be acceptable. Before a final approval is granted, a complete set of working drawings must be submitted for further review. 53 E. Logan Street, Charles Newman, Architect. Mr. Newman presented his plans for the rehabilitation of the building situate at 53 E. Logan Street to the Committee for review. The Committee members found Mr. Newman's proposal to be acceptable and agreed to recommend its approval to the Commission. Since the proposed work does not constitute a complete restoration of the structure, 53 E. Logan Street will not be eligible for a plaque upon completion of the work. 522 Woodland Terrace, Hans Egli, Architect. As a courtesy, Mr. Egli presented his plans for the construction of a new building of contemporary design on the lot located at 522 Woodland Terrace. The houses within the 500 block of Woodland Terrace are listed on both the local and national registers. The Committee members thanked Mr. Egli for his presentation and expressed their satisfaction with his contemporary treatment of the proposed new structure. 912 and 914 Spruce Street, Iry Shapiro, Architect. Mr. Shapiro presented his plans calling for the restoration of 912 and 914 Spruce Street to the Committee for review. The Committee examined the plans in detail and agreed to recommend an approval of Mr. Shapiro's submission, in concept. However, it was agreed that additional submissions in detail must be required before a final approval can be issued. Sections through the window frames, shutters and window muntins must be submitted along with roof shingle and mortar specifications. The new downspout should be round, not corrugated, and executed in anodized aluminum. More- over, the Committee asked that the transom lights over the doors match the original design found at 916 Spruce Street. All marble should be thoroughly cleaned with a non-abrasive cleaning solution. If a plaque is desired, the buildings must be completely and accurately restored. This would include the restoration of the original iron railings and basement grilles as well as all the aforementioned items. Before a final approval can be granted, revised drawings including all required details and sections must be submitted for further review. ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE 3 19 March 1980 SUBMISSIONS (Cont'd) 37 South 3rd Street, Bill Headley. Mr. Headley presented to the Committee his proposal for the partial restoration of
aforementioned items. Before a final approval can be granted, revised drawings including all required details and sections must be submitted for further review. ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE 3 19 March 1980 SUBMISSIONS (Cont'd) 37 South 3rd Street, Bill Headley. Mr. Headley presented to the Committee his proposal for the partial restoration of the ground floor at 37 South 3rd Street. Mr. Headley expressed his intention to expose the original arched openings within three days on the ground floor and to restore the original transom lights. While the Committee encouraged the replacement or reproduction of the original doors within these openings, as shown in the Commission's photographs of the building, they agreed to allow the installation of doors of a more simple design. These doors, however, should fill the entire opening up to the line of the original transom bar. Mr. Headley agreed to revise his drawing in conformance with the above recommendations and to submit it to the Commission staff for a final review and approval. PLAQUES 119 Elfreth's Alley. Both Mr. Bartley and Mr. Levy agreed to inspect this building to determine its eligibility for a Commission plaque. 48 South 3rd Street.
