ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING, 18 November 1969 Present: Mr. John F. Lloyd, Acting Chairman Mr. Erling H. Pedersen Mr. Richmond P. Miller Dr. Margaret B. Tinkcom, Historian Mrs. Charles J. Maurer, Secretary Miss Patricia Siemiontkowski, Clerk II. SUBMISSIONS 246 and 248 Monroe Street, Mr. Alden Blyth, Jr., Architect & Owner. The Commission was asked to approve removal of the two front chimneys on the party wall because the supports for both have been eliminated part of the way up. This was done some years ago, creating a structural problem. This was approved but it was agreed that it should not be considered a precedent. The drawings were approved and favorable comments made on their quality. 628 Spruce Street, Mr. Gene DiRe, Owner. Restoration of the doorway to its original state is not possible until 630 is also restored. Therefore, it was suggested that the area of the backplate, indicated on the drawing, be filled in with brick to match the rest of the front and that the present roughcast surround be covered and replaced by a simple brick arch. Blinds, not panelled shutters, must hang at the second and third floor levels. The drawing is approved. But note shall be taken that no openings in the facade will be permitted for air condition units. RESUBMISSIONS 419, 421 S. Second Street, Mr. A. DeRoy Mark, Architect. It was recommended that the projecting signboard be replaced with a marble belt course, which may be 12" wide and which must be continuous across the facades of 419 and 421. The rest of the drawing is approved. 423 and 425. Same architect. This is approved with recommendation that blinds be used at the second and third floor levels, not panelled shutters. 600 Spruce Street, Mr. Michael Marmel, Owner. The shutters must be omitted at the fourth floor windows. Details of windows, doorway, shutters must be submitted as soon as possible. Meanwhile, work on the walls and the interior may continue as all other aspects of the drawing is approved. 221 Pine Street, Mr. Roland S. Davies, Jr., Architect. It is recommended that the first floor window be centered in the space between the door and the westernmost party wall. The present location of the door and that of all other windows must be identical in size and location when the new front is erected. The request for this is approved. Bricks must match the original

The present location of the door and that of all other windows must be identical in size and location when the new front is erected. The request for this is approved. It was approved to ask the Redevelopment Authority for a land use map with certified buildings indicated on it, clearly showing which of these are to be demolished. PROBLEM: 139 Elfreth's Alley. A letter from the attorney for the Elfreth's Alley Association was read. It was agreed that the Commission should ask the Association to refer the matter to the Department of Licenses and Inspections. PLAQUES were approved for 234 Stamper Street; 1613 and 1615 West Girard Avenue. Blinds on the Girard Avenue houses could be restored at a later time. Respectfully submitted, M. P. Maurer
