Pedersen, A.I.A., Old Philadelphia Development Corporation Russell Milnor, A.I.A., Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority Richard Tyler, Historian Patricia Szaniontkowski, Executive Assistant to the Chairman Also: Mr. Grusman, a member of the staff of Thalheimer and Weitz, to present that firm's proposal for alterations to the first floor of the St. James Hotel at Thirteenth and Walnut Streets. B. Goldentyre, Department of Public Property, and a representative of Sanders & Thomas, Inc. to present their requisition for alterations to the entrance stairs at 701-11 North Eighth Street. SUBMISSIONS St. James Hotel, Thirteenth and Walnut Streets, H. F. Nacker, Architect. Mr. Grusman of Thalheimer and Weitz presented to the Committee for review a complete set of working drawings for alterations to the ground floor of the St. James Hotel. It was noted that the glass on the Thirteenth Street side of the building would be carried up into the arch of the window openings as suggested by Mr. Levy in his preliminary review of the submission. Approval of this proposal is recommended. 701-11 North Eighth Street, Hugo Bulo, Architect. A representative of Sanders & Thomas, Inc. and B. Goldentyre of the Department of Public Property presented their requisition for alterations to the entrance stairs to the building situated at 701-11 North Eighth Street. The Committee recommended that the stairs be pulled in to the building facade. It was agreed that it should be possible to implement this suggestion without having to close any of the basement window openings. The cast stone facing on the stairway was accepted by the Committee. Finally, it was suggested that the area below the watertable be stuccoed and struck with a joint to follow the rhythm of the existing marble fabric. 22 Summit Street, David Folk, Architect. Approval of this proposal for the addition of a garage at the rear of 22 Summit Street is recommended. 137 Carpenter Street, Leon Levin, Architect. Approval of this restoration proposal is recommended. It is suggested, however, that two panels on each shutter rather than three, on the first floor, be used. The Committee recommends the approval of this proposal to install entrance ramps at the rear of this building. PROBLEMS 5226 Germantown Avenue (roof). At the request of Henry J. Magaziner, project architect for renovations to this building, the Committee took into consideration the question of restoration of the roof. The Committee suggested either the restoration of the existing terra metal roof or the reroofing of the structure with shingles. If the architect decides to install a shingle roof, the cornice brackets must be removed. 1129 Spruce Street (sign). The Committee suggested referring this matter to the Redevelopment Authority to determine whether or not commercial signs are permitted in the area. If permitted, the Committee recommended that the Historical Commission withhold its review of the design of the sign until after it has been considered by the Art Commission. PLAQUES 228 Monroe Street. Approval of the "Certified Restored" plaque is recommended. Bergdoll Mansion, 2201-05 Green Street.
