ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING 23 July, 1964 Present were: Mr. George K. Trautwein, Chairman Mr. R. Norris Williams, II. Mr. John F. Lloyd for the Redevelopment Authority Dr. Margaret B. Tinkcom, Historian Mrs. Charles J. Maurer, Secretary SUBMISSIONS Carpenters' Hall, South Doorway. Mr. Brumbaugh's drawing, report and cover letter approved. 234 South Third Street. Mr. Barnett's plans, including contact prints for the railing, were approved. 519 Delancey Street. Mr. DeRoy's Mark's drawing was approved. Comment was that the survey mentions "door and shutters are panelled", but it was recommended that this not be pointed out in the letter to the architect, but only remain in the record. 707 Spruce Street. Mr. Cross's submission was approved. 711 Spruce Street. It was recommended that the owner be informed that the survey mentions a flat topped frontispiece, rather than one with pitched pediment. The architect, Mr. Cross, shall be asked what is his basis for the submitted design. 243 S. Warnock Street. The architect, Newton Levine, shall be informed that the Commission expects a full elevation of the Irving Street Facade; that approval of his submission is based only on the drawing as sub- mitted, with the recommendation that if a new door is hung, it must be appropriate to the 1812 period of the house. Attention to the fact that 1128 Lombard Street door and steps (about to be demolished, see below) would be suitable and might be acquired for use if they are of the correct size. 249 S. Warnock Street. Mr. Levine's submission is approved. 413 Spruce Street. This preliminary drawing requires further study, with a better design for the door and shutter details to be furnished. 114 Elfreth's Alley. Mr. Batcheler's application for a building permit to repair the roof (and incidental to this, the cornice as well) was approved. A letter is pending, together with a profile of the existing cornice. Head House Square, 400, 402, 404 and 402 S. 2nd Street, rear elevations. The drawings, architectural renderings were approved with the suggestion that the single opening at the rear of 406, for Apartment 208, be either a single or a double brick arch to harmonize with the double arches between the backbuildings. Attention should be drawn to the fact that this opening does not appear in the floor plans. The submission is approved. DEMOLITION REQUESTED 1128 Lombard Street. Dr. Tinkcom outlined her discussion with Mr. Goodstein and Mr.

Dr. Tinkcom outlined her discussion with Mr. Goodstein and Mr. Bradley, the latter in the City Solicitor's office, in which it was ascertained that the Commission should approve the demolition. These include: 1128, 1130, 1132 Lombard; 501, 502, 505, 507 E. 12th It was recommended that this be allowed with the understanding that the Commission expects the corner properties be not only preserved but accurately restored. There can be no resolution to this problem until clarification of the Redevelopment Authority's position is obtained. The Authority may not know that the small buildings involved, on the rear of the property, are certified. A letter to Mr. Laird is recommended. PLAQUES REQUESTED 270 South Third Street. This was approved 704 Pine Street. As s:on as the owner has completely finished the work and furnished proof of this, a request for a plaque will be considered. Not now.
