Llayd, Redevelopment Authority Mr. Joseph B. Townsend, Old Philadelphia Development Corp. SUBMISSIONS 429 Spruce Street. In general, the plan is approved with the following recommendations: 1. Remove the sign on the facade to determine whether or not there is a belt course beneath it. 2. The siding of the dormer window should be parallel to the slope of the roof, and probably should be shingled. This can be proven by removing some of the present tin and may reveal original shingles still in place. The Committee went on record expressing regret that this house, known to have;been the home of James and Dolley Madison, is not to be restored as would have appeared then. An authenticated restoration, faithfully carried out in all possible details, would have been admirable and of great value to the City. 229 Spruce Street. The submission is generally approved as being closer to the eighteenth century idiom than the preliminary drawing. It shows considerable effort to carry out former recommendations and has a great deal of merit. Nevertheless the Committee makes the following suggestions to be incorporated into another drawing: 1. Raise the third storey windows to allow for a brick belt course connecting the returns of the cornices. 2. In closing the rear third storey window, recess the bricks to preserve the outline of the present window. 3. Siding on the dormer should follow the pitch of the roof. It is too late in style and ought to resemble 408 04 410 Locust Street, built g 1761. 4. The size of the glass indicated in the drawing is questioned. It is possible the sash may have been 9/9. If the second storey window frames are original, measurement of these would give the correct answer. 5. The door should have six panels, not eight. The transom is too high. It is not necessary to make the door and window levels correspond at this period. 225-227 Delancey Street. The drawing, as presented, is approved. 218 S. American Street. The architect is referred to an original door across the street and is asked to make his submission conform to it. Could not the old door be patched, rather than have a new one made to resemble it? It is remarkable that all elements of the doorway still exist, as they do in this case. Restoration would be completely authentic if the original door were useable. 2. Please check to see if the third floor sash is original. It appears to be. If so, it must be allowed to remain. The glass is curious. 3. There should be shutters (blinds) attached to the third storey windows, since the hardware appears to be present. 4. The chimney ought to have a few more courses, with a projecting overhang, as indicated in a 1908 photograph in the Commission's files. PLAQUE REQUESTED 227 South 9th Street. The house will be viewed by Mr. Peterson who will give his opinion on this request at the next meeting. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:15 P.M.
