THE MINUTES for the Stated Meeting 1 June 1972 were approved and directed to be filed. REPORTS The Report of the Architectural Committee for 20 June 1972 was approved and directed to be filed with the official copy of the Minutes. Staff Recommendations for Certifying Buildings. The following buildings were certified by the Historical Commission as being worthy of preservation: 6313 Germantown Avenue - Upper Burying Ground 4901 Germantown Avenue - Lower Burying Ground Ayers Mansion - Burholme Park Roberts-Wylie Memorial Presbyterian Church, Broad below Spruce Street John Chambers Memorial Presbyterian Church, 28th and Norris Streets 539 North Tenth Street - birthplace of Thomas Eakins 2000 block of Wallace Street (2000-42; 2001-49, inclusive.) Report on Historical Commission Activities for June, Dr. Margaret B. Tinkcom, Historian. Dr. Tinkcom visited the site of the Blue Anchor archeological dig and reported to the Board the fine job done by the McCall School students who painted the fence surrounding this site. It was agreed that a letter of thanks be sent to Dr. Hankinson, Principal of McCall School, thanking him for his cooperation in implementing this program and to the Society Hill Civic Association for donating the paint used by the school children in painting the historical scenes of old Philadelphia which now decorate this fence. MINUTES 2 6 July 1972 REPORTS (Cont'd) The Historian asked the Commission to consider adding the $1300 new in the Harry A. Batten Revolving Fund to the $2750 given to the Philadelphia Historical Commission to pay for the printing of the Historic Annalam Buildings Survey Catalog of Philadelphia being edited by the HABS staff in accordance with prior agreement between the Philadelphia Historical Commission and the National Park Service. Dr. Tinkcom also requested Commission authority to send the bent of the catalog when it is completed to the Winchell Company for

This will help to determine the number of illustrations that can be used. A motion was made to approve both requests. This was seconded and carried. Dr. Tinkcom's Report was approved and directed to be filed with the official copy of the Minutes. OLD BUSINESS The Head House and Shambles, Second and Pine Streets. Commissioner Costello, who received a telephone call from Councilman Kelly requesting an inspection of the Head House, reported that the responsibility of maintenance lay in the hands of Vestrel and Moss, the firm renting the market for the summer. It, however, it is discovered that repairs are needed to the building, the Department of Public Property will do the necessary work. NEW BUSINESS The suggestion to fly the flags of the original thirteen states on the State House Hall was taken under consideration by the Board. It was agreed that this proposal could be referred to the State of Pennsylvania which owns the mall. The second suggestion, to encourage business establishments along the Mall to fly the American flag every day, received the Board's full support. The staff was directed to survey the Independence Mall area and report on those buildings which do not fly the American flag but might well could. Letters will be sent to all those institutions not flying the flag asking them to please do so. The final suggestion proposing that the souvenir stands in historic buildings sell miniature city flags was also well received. It was decided that this suggestion be referred to the Convention and Tourist Bureau for implementation. Mr. Pinkowski reported on an up-coming television program, scheduled for Friday evening, July 7, 1972, centering on the South Philadelphia area which was the home of several famous entertainers. Mr. Pinkowski suggested that a listing of these buildings be made and subsequently considered for certification.
