THE HISTORIC VALUES COMMITTEE met April 24, 1962, in the Commission's office Present: Dr. Nichole, Chairman Mr. Williams Dr. Tinkcom The Committee approved the following proposal describing the conditions governing the awarding of Certificates of Merit: 1. The building must be well maintained. 2. Any alteration to the facade must have been planned so that the result is not discordant with the style of the original building or with the street scape of which it is a part. (It is understood, of course, that this does not imply an archaeological restoration.) 3. A modern store frontwall disqualify a building automatically. (However, a store front of the period of the house itself would be acceptable.) The following buildings were proposed for certification: 550 N. 7th St. - Poe House 709 N. Franklin St. 704-718 N. Franklin St. 701-715, 719-721 N. 8th St. The Committee discussed the problem of preserving some of Philadelphia's handsome late 19th-century buildings, specifically the John Wanamaker house, 2052 Walnut St. It was agreed that the Commission's program should be studied with this problem in view.
