SUBMISSIONS √ 618 South Front Street, Benjamin Walbert (volunteer architect). This submission was approved with a suggestion that the meeting rail on the shutter be lowered. √ 2125 Green Street (not certified), Norman Rice, F.A.I.A. The Committee recommended that an air conditioning louver on the front facade be placed behind the shutter to conceal it from view if it could not be totally eliminated from the front wall. A third alternative could be that one of two louvers are under each of the third story windows to give an even balance to the facade. Secondly, it is recommended that the double door be retained and that the balls be installed into the inpost panel of the doorway and the letter slots into the lower door panel. √ St. James Hotel - 1230 Walnut Street, Philip Mastrin, A.I.A. The Committee requires that full light sash be installed on all floors. If ceilings are to be suspended, soffits can be provided to allow use of full light sash. √ 225 Fitzwater Street, John Anholt (volunteer architect). The Committee approved of the owner's plan to rehabilitate 225 Fitzwater and the three court houses at the rear. It is strongly recommended that a solid six panel door be used on each of the court houses rather than that shown on the drawing. The staff will be glad to supply the owner with door, as well as shutter, details. √ 1912 Rittenhouse Square, George B. Roberts, R.A. Approved. √ 734 Pine Street, Charles Broady and Associates. Approved. The original 4/4 light sash in the dormer should be followed. √ 513 Delancey Street (interior and rear), A. DeRoy Mark, A.I.A. Approved. √ 537 Pine Street, William A. Laird, R.A. The Committee approved the architect's request to alter his plans for the cellar bulkhead by keeping the checks and replacing the wooden door with small light glass. DEMOLITIONS New Century Club. The Executive Committee of the New Century Club explained to the Committee their plan to sell their property at 124 South Twelfth Street. The club is having financial difficulties and even so is unable afford to keep the building in good repair. The property, presently under an agreement of sale with the owner of the adjoining parking lot, would be used as a temporary parking lot until such time as Federal funds be sold for redevelopment. Mr. Kramer related the Authority's plans to have the land in this block used for commercial development. It was the consensus of the Committee that this building could not be retained by the New Century Club and that a demolition permit application would be approved if the Historical Commission staff were permitted to photograph the interior of the building and arrange for the salvage of whatever original fabric of interest remains. 541 South Penn Street. The Committee will allow this structure to be demolished if that is agreeable with the Redevelopment Authority. 2500-02 Germantown Avenue. The Committee objected to the demolition of these two early buildings and will withhold approval of the owner's application. Infirmary Building, Girard College. Since this building was partially demolished before work could be halted at the site, it was agreed that the remainder of the structure should not be left open and accessible to the boys on campus and, therefore, the application to demolish was approved. The Committee recommended, however, that a letter from the Historical Commission's legal advisor be sent to the Hawthorne Demolition Company warning of legal action against the company if such illegal procedure is again initiated. 1101 South Street. The Committee agreed to the demolition of this building since it had been badly damaged when hit by a truck last month. PROBLEMS 401 South Third Street. Since the contractor did not follow the approved plans presented to the Redevelopment Authority, the Authority is now requiring him to remove the existing doorway and replace it with one that had been approved by the Historical Commission and the Redevelopment Authority. It was the opinion of the Committee that this was an unfortunate happening but that, since the job was well done, the owner should not be required to change the present doorway. As soon as the shutters and other wood trim are painted an appropriate single color, a plaque will be forthcoming. 636 Panama Street. Approved. St. Vincent dePaul Church. Approved, for both church and school.
