The Historical Values Committee met, March 29, 1966, in the office of the Philadelphia Historical Commission. Present: Dr. Nichols, chairman; Mr. Williams and Mrs. Tinkcom. 1. Recommendations are herewith made that contracts be drawn for Edwin Iwanicki in the amount of $750.; and of an honorarium for Mrs. Graham, of $375. This will leave approximately $1,000. unencumbered in the Purchase of Services fund for 1966. (Sufficient moneys have been transferred from the Class 200 account to Class 100 to cover a full-time salary for Mrs. Kirkbride for this calendar year, and to provide for half-time salary for Dr. Tinkcom to July 1, 1966, and full-time thereafter for the balance of the year.) 2. The following properties have been considered for certification: (a) 375 E. Church Lane; and 51, 53, 59, 61, 67, 69, 75, 77, 81 E. Church Lane. These last houses were built c 1840 and were probably constructed to provide good housing for the workers in the old mill still standing on the opposite side of Church Lane. This, too, could be certified, but since it will almost certainly be demolished to accomodate the connecting highway between W. Rittenhouse Street and the Hunting; Park extencion of Roosevelt Boulevard, certi-fication should be deferred. Many of the houses still standing on Tulpehocken, Greene, Knox, Coulter and Penn Streets date from the centennial era. They reflect the affluence of the town and its people. These houses were large, in the best taste of the period, and some of them, like Ivy Lodge, 29 East Penn Street, had been designed by architects with a national reputation. Proposed for certification are: (b) 26, 42-44 W. Coulter St; & 110-114-118-124; and 115-117, 121, 143, 151 W. Penn & Queen Lane) (i) 1424 Chestnut St. The Historical Values Committee proposed that the Commissions' research staff in planning its future activities, ⊟ include the compilation of an iconography of Philadelphia. To this end, they will collect and arrange systematically materials relative to the history and physical development of Philadelphia. These materials are basically of the same sort as those already in the Philadelphia Historical Commission files, i.e., briefs of title, insurance records, photographs and prints, maps, etcetera. It will be necessary, however, to expand the scope of our research so that entire areas, not just certified buildings, are completely documented. It is further proposed that the planning and supervising of the research and the preparation of the report for publication be under the direction of Dr. Tinkcom, working with the assistance of Mrs. Kirkbride. (The whole project should be carried on by the Commission's research staff without the addition of any outside personnel.) This is a project upon which the City can look with pride, since it will put Philadelphia clearly in the lead not only in preserving the buildings that serve as visible illustrations of its history but in documenting that history so that the information it provides is available to all interested persons.
