The proposal to install a new large glass window in the rear of this certified building was approved. 308 South Philip Street (door only). The Committee agreed that a door design at 308 S. Philip Street, approved by the Commission in 1961, be installed at 308 S. Philip Street. 236 and 238 Monroe Street, Nick James Chimes, R. A. The submission for 236 Monroe Street was approved. The Committee noted that the adjoining building under review, 238 Monroe, was constructed approximately 45 years later and recommended several changes. Sash on all floors should be 6 over 6 with lowered shutters hung above the first floor instead of paneled ones. The design of the former is inappropriate for an 1835 structure and it is recommended that the architect come to the Commission office for advice on the type of dormer window suitable for this house. Finally, the brickwork is to be flinch with a tight joint and the door, in order to be in proportion with the rest of the structure, should be at least seven feet in height. RESUBMISSIONS Saddley Guard House, East Fairmount Park, Walter B. Henkin, R.A. Although the Committee has no jurisdiction over new encroached on it did note with chagrin that the plans submitted call for the erection of a pseudo-Victorian structure and expressed the hope that this will not be repeated anywhere else in the Park. Objections were also made to the loss of the most notable doorway on the existing guard house. It is requested that this door and its portico either be resected on the opposite side of the old building or put in a safe storage place until a use can be found for it. The Committee reaffirmed its stand that no plaque can be awarded to the building until the frontispiece has been placed over the door. A copy of Mr. Grant Simon's letter of November 3, 1966, to the architect, will be sent to the owner since it clearly states that the restoration at that time was not complete. University Museum, grand staircase, a report. Mrs. Meuver reported that a variance from the Building Code is needed to allow the grand staircase to remain open. The Committee recommended that the Chairman write a letter in support of the granting of such a variance since the enclosure of the staircase would detract from the historical and aesthetic qualities of the building. DEMOLITIONS 794 South Front Street. The Committee recommended that the front be replaced by one in character with the original building. 105 and 107 Catharine Street. The Committee agreed to the demolition of these certified buildings but recommended that a graphic record be made of the structures before they are torn down. PLAQUES 1622 Locust Street. Approved. 120 Delancey Street. This request will be held until the Committee is supplied with a photograph of the restored building. 307 Queen Street. Approved. 20 West Tulpehocken Street.
