The Minutes of the Stated Meeting of the Philadelphia Historical Commission held on 2 August 1979 were reviewed and approved subject to the following amendment: At the suggestion of Mr. Pinkowski a resolution supporting the issuance of a tercentenary commemorative stamp to honor Penn's Treaty with the Indians at Shackamaxon as portrayed by Benjamin West will be prepared for submission to the Commission at its next meeting. Mr. Pinkowski agreed to draft the resolution and to review it with the Commission's Historian. Since Congressman Lederer has expressed his interest in Penn Treaty Park, it was suggested that a letter be directed to the Congressman soliciting his support for this endeavor. REPORTS The Report on Philadelphia Historical Commission Staff Activities for the month of August, Richard Tyler, Historian. At the request of the Chairman, Mr. Tyler elaborated on the staff's activities during the month of August, particularly those involving research on Penn Treaty Park. A statement of significance will be prepared by the Historian staff and presented to Congressman Lederer for use in his effort to have Penn Treaty Park incorporated into the National Park System. The Commission's Vice Chairman asked the Historian whether it would be advisable for the Historical Commission to take a formal policy stand in support of the park's acquisition by the National Park Service. Mr. Tyler suggested withholding formal support at this 239th STATED MEETING 2 6 September 1979 time, since the City Planning Commission is studying the possibility of acquiring more land adjacent to Penn Treaty Park to offer for water recreation, parking, or some other supportive use. OLD BUSINESS: Old Maps in Commission Collection. As directed by the Historical Commission at its July meeting, the Office of the City Archives was offered the ten old maps uncovered recently in the Commission's collection. Mr. Weinberg, City Archivist, declined the offer and strongly urged the staff to deposit the maps in a repository equipped with the facilities to care for them properly. At the suggestion of Mr. Weinberg, Mr. Hoak wrote to the Free Library of Philadelphia. Of the ten maps offered, Mr. Post, head of the map collection, agreed to accept four. He would not agree, however, to supply the Historical Commission with photocopies of the originals as requested. After some discussion concerning the transfer of these maps to the Free Library and the acquisition of photocopies for the Commission's collection, it was agreed that the Historian should contact the Director of the Free Library and ask that copies be supplied the Commission. Mr. Pinkowski suggested using money from the Harry A. Batten Fund, if that were necessary, to obtain full size photocopies of the transferred maps. NEW BUSINESS National Trust for Historic Preservation Meeting. The Commission and its Chairman approved Miss Siemionkowski's representing the Commission at the National Trust's annual meeting. In addition, the Commission authorized the expenditure of $400.00 from the Harry A. Batten Fund to cover expenditures. The Chairman agreed to pay all additional costs over that amount.
