D R A F T MINUTES OF THE ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING, APRIL 17, 1962 Present were: Mr. George K. Trautwein, Chairman Mr. Charles E. Peterson Mr. R. Norris Williams II., sent his regrets Also present: Mr. John F. Lloyd, for the Redevelopment Authority Mr. Joseph B. Townsend, Jr., for the OPDC Mrs. Charles J. Maurer, Secretary Dr. Tinkcom was unable to be present SUBMISSIONS 405-09 S. Thirteenth Street. This drawing was approved. Letter is to state that because present cornice is to remain, no plaque may be awarded 209 S. American Street. Approved in-general, but with the comment that the mouldings are too early. Recommended that architect look at GAR drawings for 240 S. Fourth Street, dated 1810 (should be 1829, states Mr. Peterson), 340 South Twelfth Street. No Mansard roof; if structure must be re- duced to three and a half stories, then it must be a pitched roof with box cornice. It is recommended that the four stories remain; that the first floor double window be replaced with two windows such as exists at 338 S. 12th; that panel shutters, appropriate to 1830's be hung on these windows, louvered shutters above. A solid door, simple transom and transom bar as at 338 with similar moulding. Wrought iron rail can be similar to that existing for area way at 338. Another drawing required. 600 Pine Street. Bargeboard should taper one inch every ten feet. Existing bargeboard does this; architect please note. If any change is to be made to the dormer at this time, it should match the dormer of 604 Pine, built at the same time. It was recommended that the new door on the Pine Street facade be shire head with simple transom, simple mouldings, as it is hoped that some day the original doorway on the Sixth Street facade will be restored. The present alterations do not consti- tute a restoration, but do comply with requirements of the Redevelopment Authority. 302 Delancey Street. The architectural drawing shows improvement over the first submission and many points raised formerly are now corrected. However, the dormer now existing is original; the drawing of it is not correct. The Committee questions the lintels, asking whether they are stone or merely painted brick; if the latter, then these must be erased. The present transom bar is original and must be preserved; doorframe mouldings appear to be original as well. Venetian shutters

The door is approved. Is the window original at the size indicated? A study of the interior will will reveal the answer. It is recommended that all details be kept as simple as possible and that a drawing of a typical box cornice be shown the draftsman. Upper windows should have slat shutters, not solid panels. MEASURED DRAWINGS The drawings of Mr. George A. Robbins, five of the seven commissioned sheets having been received are approved. It was recommended that the Commission have ten sets on hand; that the Redevelopment Authority and the OPDC will each purchase a set from the Department of Records, but that owners of certified buildings, interested in restoring them, might borrow a set, or be given a single sheet as circumstances require. 238 SOUTH THIRD STREET
Commission have ten sets on hand; that the Redevelopment Authority and the OPDC will each purchase a set from the Department of Records, but that owners of certified buildings, interested in restoring them, might borrow a set, or be given a single sheet as circumstances require. 238 SOUTH THIRD STREET A recent acquisition is a photostat of a drawing, signed by Wilson Eyre, Jr., Mr. Lloyd stated that, in view of this and other recent information, it is his opinion that a letter to the Redevelopment Authority, expressing the Commission's desire to have the facade preserved, would carry weight. The Chairman reported that the matter will be on the agenda of the next Stated Meeting, at which time possible action might be taken, with this end in view. Respectfully submitted [HANDWRITTEN NOTES: Left margin, upper portion: Handwritten notation reading "Lloyd Wants approval or ok" with what appears to be an approval mark or signature]
