MINUTES OF THE ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING 25 March, 1965 Present were: Mr. George K. Trautwein, Chairman Mr. R. Norris Williams, II. Also present: Mr. John F. SUBMISSIONS 412 South Tenth Street Drawing by Joseph Praissman approved. 1212 Spruce Street. Drawing by Linn Wright approved with appreciative comment 208 Beck Street. Request from Mr. William W. Jeanes to be approved if only sash on the third floor font is involved. The Commission looks forward to seeing drawings for the full restoration of this property, some day.. 302 South Second Street. The drawing is approved. Question was asked who will review the color, texture and joint of the new brick front. Mr. Lloyd stated that this is his responsibility. 225 S. Third Street. The new roof is approved. as per request in a letter from the Rev. Arnold Purdy, Director of Episcopal Community Services, if the material used be 40 lb. tailor tin, painted. 323 South Third Street. Request to provide a panelled door with side lights and shallow arched transom, opening upon the proposed garden at the north of the restored house, is approved. 411 Pine Street. The drawing by Jos. B. Towneend, Jr., is approved. It is assumed that the new extension will be constructed of brick to match the facade of the present building. 523 Cypress Street, rear of 522 Spruce. The plans are approved, although the Historical Commission would prefer that the double doorway have the steel beam removed and replaced by a shallow arch. The alterations do not constitute work for which a plaque can be authorized. QUERIES from the Redevelopment Authority for Washington Square West Store Fronts 215 S. 9th Street. Redesigned to its 1816 period, this present commercial front may remain, if this is consistent with policy set up by the Re- development Authority for this area adjacent to Walnut Street. 221 S. 9b Street. The same recommendation has for 215 S. 9b 249 S. 12b Street. It was recommended that if the Redevelopment Authority' plan to have this block a residential block is carried out, that no compromise be allowed and that this certified building be returned to a domestic front, with correct details for its 1839 period. The same recommendation as that for 215 and 221 S. 9th Street prevails for this 1832 structure - A store front consistent with its period will be approved. A drawing, of course, is expected. 1234 Pine Street. The same recommendation holds for this 1842 structure. It is clearly understood that the present store front of this and the others on Pine Street, are subject to the Redevelopment Authority's proposals for this area that Antique Row may remain a commercial neighborhood. PLAQUES REQUESTED The Union League. The request is denied until the ladies Entrance and windows on the Broad Street facade are restored. 7402 Germantown Avenue. The 1962 stipulation regarding the inappropriate entrance and the over-size dormar windows be corrected still stands. Architectural drawings showing alterations are required. These must be approved and the work correctly carried out before a plaque may be authorized. PROBLEM 231 Spruce Street. A letter from Urban Moss III. was read. It was agreed that Mr. Pedereen would view the restoration in the light of complaints mentioned. Mr. Lloyd stated that the work is not complete and in his opinion the criticism is premature. Mr. Moss, however, is certainly to be thanked for his interest and cooperation. Also his understanding that the Historical Commission is not equipped or prepared to follow-up the approved plans was appreciated.
