HVC — Jun 14, 1961

The Historical Values Committee met June 14, 1961, at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Present: Dr. Nichols, Chairman Mr. Williams Dr. Tinkcom, Historian It was agreed that the Committee recommend that Miss Elizabeth Walton, a graduate student at the Pennsylvania State University be engaged to make a field survey of the Frankford area this summer. Miss Walton would be paid at the rate of $1.75 per hour and a contract in the amount of $450 would be given her for work to be done during July and August. Mr. Arnold Blumberg's proposal that a tablet in memory of Dr. Allen Evans be affixed to the Head House was considered. The Committee recommends that this request be refused. The Committee recommends that the request for a plaque for the "Castle" of the State - in - Schuylkill be considered favorably. Although this building is no longer within the city limits, it belongs to an old Philadelphia organization, and stood for many years opposite Bartram's Gardens on the Schuylkill. For this reason, the Committee is of the opinion that an exception may reasonably be made. The Committee also recommends that Mr. Robert Cassidy's request for a plaque for 408 S. 10th Street be granted. Although the session on historic preservation planned by the American Association for State and Local History has been postponed for a year, the Committee is of the opinion that the Commission should be represented at the annual meeting of this Association and recommends that Dr. Tinkcom be sent as the Commission's delegate. The decision to refuse Mr. Blumberg's request for a plaque in honor of Dr. Evans is to be considered a precedent. [HANDWRITTEN NOTES: Top right corner: handwritten number "C2976"]
