MINUTES OF THE ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE PHILADELPHIA HISTORICAL COMMISSION 24 April 1969 Present: Mr. John F. Lloyd, Acting Chairman, representing the Redevelopment Authority Mr. Richmond P. Miller, Member of the Historical Commission Mr. Erling H. Pedersen, for Old Philadelphia Development Corp. Dr. Margaret B. Tinkcom, Historian Mrs. Charles J. Maurer, Secretary SUBMISSIONS (Reviewed in reverse of the way they are listed on the agenda) University Museum, 33d and South/Spruce Streets, Mitchell & Giurgola, Architects. Approval was given for an opening in the rear or south wall of the certified building to provide access to the proposed new wing. 5208 Germantown Avenue. Proposal by Captain Crenshaw to Judge Saylor was transmitted to this Commission by Mr. Henry Magaziner, architect. It was recommended that the trim must match existing trim of the roof, both in profile and in proportion; that the barge board must taper precisely as does the existing one and must have a similar bead. The Commission understands that the pole gutter is to be retained. With these considerations firmly in mind, approval is given for these repairs. A building permit must be obtained and stamped with the Commission's approval. 321 Pine Street. John Rauch, Architect. The proposals are approved with the suggestion that the transom over the door have three panes. 329 S. Third Street, J. Joshua Fish, Architect. Details of all moldings for the door, door framing, shutters and cornice is required. Opinion on the submission is withheld pending receipt of these profiles. 628 Spruce Street, Mr. Gene DiRe, Owner. Commendations are to be given to the owner for the extent of the work he plans to undertake. But to be certain that he is protected from error, the Commission expects drawings of the shutters to be made, which must match the moldings of the doorway. It is recommended that some of the rusticated stone around the doorway be removed to find out what is underneath it. In the event that the bricks were damaged when the stonework was done, it is recommended that it remain until 630 Spruce is also restored. 273 S. Third Street. H. W. Kramer, Architect. This submission is approved with the recommendation that a suitably designed fanlight be in- stalled. This should have clear glass. PROBLEMS 109 Kenilworth. The Department of Licenses and Inspections are to be alerted that the present permit does not cover any change in windows. Aluminum sash are not permitted.

The Department of Licenses and Inspections are to be alerted that the present permit does not cover any change in windows. Aluminum sash are not permitted. Architectural Committee Minutes 4.24.69 Page 2 PROBLEMS continued 403 S. Third Street. The incorrect cornice must be removed and the original repaired, or else a new cornice installed which will precisely match the original in profile, continuous with those on either side of 403. 713 Walnut Street. Railing for the areaway must be appropriate to the 1800 period of the house and the new areaway must be kept within the projection of the front steps. This is approved with the admonition that, in view of the trouble unauthorized alterations have caused the owner of this certified building, the Historical Commission expects the work to be done with extra care and at- tention to every detail. First Baptist Church of Pittson, Pennsylvania. It is recommended that the County Records be examined for a photograph of the church showing its appearance in the early days of its existence. Cleaning and pointing should be done on advice of a competent architect. 330 S. 44 Street. Mr. Lloyd produced a letter from the owner saying that several contractors had refused to remove the first floor because of the condition of the upper and side walls. Mr. Lloyd asked the Committee to consider an alternative treatment and showed photo- graphs of the finished restoration of 300 S. 2nd Street which had been approved by the Historical Commission. It was resolved that the same treatment of the first floor front would be acceptable for 330 S. 44. Approval to go ahead is to be withheld until a letter from the contractors stating the problem is presented for review. PLAQUES REQUESTED 310 S. 4th Street. In keeping with the Commission's policy, a 5 x 7 inch photograph is required. A plaque will then be authorized. 507 Spruce Street. Approved 115 Beck Street. Approved 6341 Ridge Avenue. In view of the excellent state of preservation of this building partially restored some years ago, it is the consensus that the restoration should be completed. view of the excellent state of preservation of this building partially restored some years ago, it is the consensus that the restoration should be completed. This will require the restora- tion of a cornice of the late 18th century; of simple ringheys correctly capped; and the replacement of the present hanging gutter with a pole gutter and proper downspout. 1207 Rodman Street. A 5 x 7 inch photograph is necessary before a judgment can be given on the appropriateness of a plaque. This will show whether the quality of the restoration is up to the Commission's standard. It shall be pointed out by letter that the building is already certified. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned about five o'clock. Respectfully submitted M. R.
