Maurer, Secretary THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING held 24 September 1968 were approved as circulated REPORTS Historical Values Committee, Dr. Roy Franklin Nichols, Chairman This report was read and a list of buildings recommended to be certified was approved. The report was directed to be filed with the official copies of the Minutes. Architectural Committee, Mrs. Charles J. Maurer, Secretary This report was read and approved after a discussion on the problem of 213 S. Sartain Street. Mr. McSorley made suggestions relative to a letter to the Chairman of the Board of License and Inspection Review, with a copy to the Assistant City Solicitor concerned with the case. The report was directed to be filed. The Commission's Activities, Dr. Margaret B. Tinkcom, Historian This report was read and favorably commented upon. It was approved and directed to be filed with the official copies of the Minutes. OLD BUSINESS The Monastery. Dr. Tinkcom reported that an inspection of this historically important structure began the Commission's survey of the Fairmount Park buildings. A copy of the Commission's report was sent to Commissioner Costello. The desirability of using Mrs. Kirkhride's car (with reimbursement at the regular mileage allowance) was proposed and Dr. Tinkcom was advised to send a memorandum on this to Commissioner Costello. Fort Mifflin. The National Park Service has asked the Historical Commission to propose that the Fort be reconsidered for a National Historical Landmark status. This was approved. The Log House, 16th & Race Streets. Application for a permit to move this to Smithon, 13th & Courtland Streets, has been approved. Dr. Tinkcom stated that Miss Barbara Liggett is doing an archaeological study on the proposed new site for the Log House, so that no foundations of any important earlier building will be covered. The Chairman gave the background for the suggestion that the Society of Architectural Historians and the Historical Commission is invited to occupy available space in the Athenaeum, 219 S. Sixth Street. The Chairman thought this might not be appropriate for this Commission to accept for several reasons and had discouraged it. Dr. Tinkcom pointed out that the Commission's records are part of the City's archives and not therefore available for disbursal to a private library and that the public would find it inconvenient to go to Sixth Street for approval on applications for building permits or to consult our files. The Chamber of Commerce. It was reported that packets of letters asking for information on varied subjects have been relayed to this office for reply although most queries had no relevance to the Historical Commission's data. Mr. McSorley recommended that these letters sent to the City Representative's Office and that a letter be sent to Mr. Thatdhor Longetroth with a brochure on the Commission's procedures enclosed. Model Cities Report. Dr. Tinkcom reported on the excellent report Mrs. Philip Lapsansky had prepared on the program and that it had been read in New York at the Annual Meeting of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. Buildings in Danger: The Art Club, 220 S. Broad Street 508-510 Walnut Street 20 S. 12th Street, Twelfth Street Friends' Meetinghouse Comments on the value from historical and architectural points of view were made on each of these.
