MINUTES OF THE ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING, May 26, 1961 Present were: Mr. R. Norris Williams Mr. Charles E. Peterson Mr. John F. Lloyd Mr. Grant M. Simon, Chairman, pro tem Mrs. Charles J. Maurer, Secretary SUBMISSIONS 228 Pine Street. It was recommended that the steps be restored to their original design, not turned as indicated in the drawing. Mr. Lloyd stated that the Redevelopment Authority will help the owner to acquire the needed space. It was recommended that the three panelled shutter mouldings be modified, as outlined by Mr. Simon. It was also recommended that the architect consider chimnies for the back building, which will be a separate duplex apartment. The submission was approved with the provision that the brick wall (vaneer) and the steps be properly executed. 244 S. 9th Street. The owner is required to furnish an architectural drawing. The committee withheld comment on the one submitted. 253 Pine Street. It was recommended that the drawing for the shutters show panel proportions exactly duplicating the 1931 photograph and that the arch head door have a fanlight. It was further recommended that the steps be drawn to show thatthey aretwín steps with the house to the east and the suggestion was made that a cellar entrance be designed, calling the architect's attention to the practical use of this feature. It was further recommended that the cellar windows have bars. 401 South Third Street. Comments on the door and iron rail indicate that the drawing is still not coorrect. It was recommended that the architect submit evidence to substantiate the details of the doorway and if necessary, a restudy be made of it, based upon the possibility of there having been a vault basement entrance. Mr. Lloyd reported that there exists a vault under the sidewalk, extending almost to the curb. 712-716 Walnut Street. Shutters only are involved. It was recommended that the architect indicate where the horizontals in relation to the fasteners should be. 1112 Spruce Street. Interior alterations only. It was recommended that the Committee make no comment. 600 Pine Street. The Committee forebore to comment, requesting that better architectural details be submitted, based on information in the files. 707 Walnut Street. It was recommended that a follow-up of the illegal work be requested of the Department of Licenses and Inspections. 229 Pine Street. It was recommended that the owner be asked to reply to the Commission's inquiry

Minutes of the Architectural Committee, May 26, continued PLAQUES Inasmuch as the Committee on Historic Values did not have a meeting in May, and because two requests for plaques have remained unanswered for some time, it was requested of the Architectural Committee that they review them. 8617 Germantown Avenue. It was recommended that a plaque be assigned to the Hill House. 119 and 125 Elfreth's Alley. It was recommended that Mrs. Kirkbride be asked to look at these two houses and report whether they have shutters, as the photographs were insufficient.
