D R A F T MINUTES OF THE ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING held on 24 March 1966 Present were: Mr. George K. Trautwein, Chairman Dr. Margaret B. Tinkcorr Mr. John P. Lloyd, for the Redevelopment Authority Mr. Erling H. Pedersen for the Old Philadelphia Development Corp. Mrs. Charles J. Maurer, Secretary SUBMISSIONS @TL 321 South Fourth Street. Windows detailed as per those at Lemon Hill approved for the already approved elevations. In view of the condition of the brickwork of the stable, it is recommended that the request to demolish this building be approved. The original bricks in the east gable should be preserved and reused in an appropriate way when the structure is rebuilt according to the drawings for it now approved. 126 Delancey Street. Drawing is approved. Pintels on the third floor windows indicate the need for shutters there as well as those shown on the drawing. 320 Lombard Street. Mr. Lloyd described the changes made to the window openings when reveal frames were installed. The drawing for the restoration of the facade was carefully reviewed with this in mind. It was recommended that the owner be encouraged to follow the drawing precisely. The recessed window space must be replaced with a plank front frame and sash identical to those for the other windows. Shutters for all windows are indicated, and these will overlap. The pointing must be correct for the early period of this structure and every effort must be made to have the mortar match existing mortar in texture and color. As a last resort, painting the patched brick would be permitted, but it is not recommended that paint be used. The drawing is approved. 522, 524 Spruce Street. Approved. 608 Spruce Street. Approved 337 South 6th Street. This preliminary drawing is approved. The Commission looks forward to seeing the details and suggests that the doorway at 539 Pine Street, which appears to be original, might serve as a guide for the proportions of the doorway details. 519 Pine Street. Glass sizes as mentioned in the survey are 10 x 16 inches for the first floor and 10 x 12 for the second, which make the sash to require six over six panes each. An arch head front door with neat flat topped frontispiece is also mentioned and should be indicated on the next submission Approval waits on this. 1225 Waverly Street. Drawing for door is approved

Drawing and model approved with commendation for careful work and extensive research at the site. 228 South Fourth Street. It is approved that the section of backbuilding from the stairwell to the end of the kitchen be demolished for a garden. All other details are also approved. QUERIES #"& 327 South Third Street. Three letters of complaint have been received, asking whether the present stucco is to be permitted to remain unveneered by brick. Dr. Tinkcoom reported on the appearance from several angles and points of view and read the letter, dated 30 November 1965 which states that because so much of the original fabric was preserved and reused, the Historical Commission would allow the stucco to remain for the present with the understanding that it would be veneered in the forseeable future. 261 South Fourth Street. A report on a telephone call from the architect was made by the secretary. Mr. Lloyd stated that a variance is indeed necessary before the work can continue, but that this is surely avail- able in due course. Meanwhile, The Commissioner of Licenses and In- spections has been asked to provide an interim building permit. This has not been granted. 329, 331 South Third Street. The position taken by the Commission in June 1965, with regard to the demolition of either of these buildings for a garden has not changed. No demolition is permitted. 239 South Eleventh Street. regard to the demolition of either of these buildings for a garden has not changed. No demolition is permitted. 239 South Eleventh Street. This is in Unit I, Washington Square West A letter from Redevelopment Authority asks the Historical Commission to release this building for clearance of the block from Walnut to Locust; 10th to 11th for Jefferson Hospital expansion. (A letter dated April 4, 1961 to Mr. W. W. Bodine, Jr., President, releases this building, but not precisely identifies it within the area just cited) Mr. Trautwein, unaware of this letter, not then remembered, raised the question of considering the demolition of a certified building only when the Commission has been shown what will replace it. It was recom- mended that this matter be referred to the Stated Meeting for clarification. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:30 P. M. Respectfully submitted George K. Trautwein, Chairman GKT:mrm [HANDWRITTEN NOTES: Line 1, top left corner: handwritten "#'" and an underline mark Line 1, upper right: cursive "c" or mark]
