ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING September 23, 1960 MINUTES Present were: Mr. Charles E. Peterson Mr. R. Norris Williams, II. Mr. George K. Trautwein, Chairman Also present: Mr. Grant M. Simon Mr. John F. Lloyd Dr. Margaret B. Tinkcom Mrs. Charles J. Haurer Bells Court: Mr. Lloyd reported that this group of four small dwellings is in demand and asked if the Commission would think well of its being sold by the Old Philadelphia Development Corporation for a single occupancy. Mr. Williams recommended that the Commission approve one unit use of Bell's Court if all details remain as were originally, the only exception being windows on the north facade, if they were necessary. This was seconded by Mr. Trautwein. Mr. Peterson objected to win- dows being allowed. Mr. Simon voiced his belief that the Depart- ment of Licenses & Inspections will demand more air and light. 511 Cypress Street Mr. Lloyd reported that the owner has been advised of the Com- mission's action taken at the August 30th meeting. The secretary was asked to read the letter from Deputy Commissioner Wegner. Mr. Lloyd reported that the hearing before the magistrate has already taken place. 230 S. 4th Street The new drawing of the doorway and first floor windows was exhib- ited. It was observed that the door is too short by about eight inches, causing the architect to allow an impost far too deep. It was recommended that the builder order a 7'3" door with four panels to match the door of 336 Spruce Street. With the change in these details, the third submission is approved. 234 S. Third Street Mr. Lloyd reported that the owner is an invalid who bought the building five years ago and makes his living there. It was recom- mended that the present submission be rejected and the builder be asked to see the data in the Commission's office. Mr. Lloyd took a copy of the submission, offering to see the builder and suggest that the cornice and windows be returned to their original state if the owner can afford to do that much restoration. Mr. Peterson agreed to look at this house and report what, in his opinion, the Commission should request. 27 Christian Street No report. Mr. Simon and Mr. Lloyd excused themselves and left the meeting. Mr. Robbinet's drawings Mr. Peterson reported that he could not approve them. Mr. Williams offered to discuss the matter with Mr. Simon. The problem was deferred, to be brought up at the Stated Meeting, September 27. The Delaware Expressway The secretary was asked to read the reply to the Committee's letter of August 31, from Mr. Park H. Martin, Secretary of Highways. Mr. Peterson asked for a copy of the letter, stating that it is valuable to be on record as protesting the proposed route of the Delaware Expressway. The Meeting was adjourned at 5:30 P. M.
