MINUTES OF THE ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING, July 24, 1961 Present were: Mr. George K. Trautwein, Chairman Mr. R. Norris Williams, II. Mr. Charles E. Peterson Also present: Mr. John F. Lloyd, Redevelopment Authority Dr. Margaret B. Tinkcom, Historian Mrs. Charles J. Maurer, Secretary SUBMISSIONS 223 S. Quinice Street. It was recommended that the owner be urged to make a complete restoration, including reduction of the building to its original size. However, if this is out of the question, theCommittee reluctantly approves the submission as presented, with the understanding that it will not qualify for a plaque. The points mentioned in the cover letter, such as slat shutters for the upper windows, are expected to be carried out to the best of the owner's intention. Approval is granted on this understanding. 520 Spruce. It was recommended that the architect be asked whether he has provided sufficient structural support for the thrust of the roof. Otherwise the sketch for interior arrangements are chiefly subject to regulations of the Building Code and under review by the Department of Licenses and Inspections. It is recommended that shutters and sofmice be designed to conform to those of 518 Spruce and that the present windows be replaced with six over six window panes. 244 S. Ninth Street. It was recommended that the owner be commended for the improvement of his drawing, but that he be informed that it still does not accurately present the idea he is intending to carry out. The Committee wants a drawing in which all details are to scale. 275 S. Fourth Street. It was recommended that the drawing be approved, with the panelled shutters modified to fit the 1900 photograph of the doorway; that slat shutters be added to the upper stories and the drawing of the doorway details be made to match the salvaged arch in every particular. 227 Pine Street. It was recommended that the east wall's brick be repaired and repointed, then painted if necessary. The Commission urges this procedure. If it is not possible to refinish the wall in this way, it reluctantly approves the use of tin, painted the color of brick to match the facade. MINUTES OF THE ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING, July 25, 1961 Continued 512 Spruce Street. The Committee recommends that the architect be commended for his greatly improved drawing of the doorway details and it will approve his application for a building permit.

tin, painted the color of brick to match the facade. MINUTES OF THE ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING, July 25, 1961 Continued 512 Spruce Street. The Committee recommends that the architect be commended for his greatly improved drawing of the doorway details and it will approve his application for a building permit. It is, however, further recommended that more precise details be given the firm which will manufacture the millwork, so that it may be accurately reproduced. 516 Spruce. It was recommended that approval be granted to the details E-E, showing the nosing carved in the present steps, after they have been turned to correspond to 518 Spruce. Old St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church. It was recommended that note be made that the sample brick was brought to the office the day of the meeting. Application has been made to veneer the walls of a recently exposed tower; the brick is said to match the newly cleaned walls. The Committee went on record saying it would not commit itself unless drawings are submitted. Aesthetically this is an important building and the Committee regrets that it was not consulted before the work was begun. Application for a permit is therefore stamped reluctantly on the basis of work already half done. (Per telephone call from Mr. Lloyd, Tuesday, July 25th) 234 South Third Street. It was recommended that the Redevelopment Authority be given approval to demolish the back buildings - a later addition - to the line indicated on the site plan. 514 Lombard Street. It was strongly recommended that the owner be requested to submit correct, architectural drawings of all details, on the basis of this buildings importance. This is in line with the recommendation made by Mr. Lloyd, to which the Committee gives full accord. 303, 305 E. American Street. It was recommended that approval be granted, but that the owner be urged to keep the cellar windows, as they appear to be original part of the fabric. It was also conceded that the owner might have information not presently available to the Commission which could alter this recommendation. PROBLEM 306 Delancey Street. In view of the report presented that the owner had installed six over six windows without a permit, before the architect's drawings were presented for review; and the owner's verbal refusal to change these to the recommended nine over nine, it was the consensus that the owner receive a

Street. In view of the report presented that the owner had installed six over six windows without a permit, before the architect's drawings were presented for review; and the owner's verbal refusal to change these to the recommended nine over nine, it was the consensus that the owner receive a letter as a result of this report. The letter shall say that the owner realizes, of course, that a plaque cannot be authorized, because the windows are not correct for the period of the building. It was also recommended that the owner's attention be drawn to the fact that the Redevelopment Authority referred all details to the Historical Commission. Meeting adjourned at 5:40 P.M. Respectfully submitted, &c...
