It was recommended that louvred shutters be hung at the second story windows and that further study be given the dormer window for evidence of mouldings that are better defined than those indicated in the drawing. Compare this dormer with others in the row. Another drawing is required to show profiles of mouldings and interior details. Ironwork, already in place is unsuitable and will prevent awarding of a plaque. Should it be replaced? 206 South Fourth Street. The doorway is disproportionately wide for the facade. One and two windows would be preferable. The matter was referred to the Chairman's decision. Details of all mouldings should be explicit for correct interpretation by the mill. The ironwork drawn is not acceptable for the period. Another drawing is required. 311 Spruce Street. Slat shutters are recommended above the first floor. Arrangement of door panels should match those approved for 309 Spruce, since both houses were built by the same man. Details of mouldings are required in the next submission; should resemble those at 309 Spruce. A carefully drawn set of plans for 309 is available for study in the Commission's office. The architect will be permitted to copy the necessary details. This includes the ironwork. The Commission hopes that if the original woodwork is still on the dormer, it will be repaired, or, if necessary, replaced in kind. (See dormer on 315 Spruce. 317 Spruce Street. Shutters should be replaced, correct for the period. The dormer needs further study and should be drawn in scale and with accurate detail. Should not the chimney ride the party line? If it can be proved that the present door is of the same period as the cornice, the Historical Commission will approved it being preserved. No changes to the first story windows are required if the Redevelopment Authority does not insist on this point, but another drawing should be submitted before a building permit can be obtained. 120 Pine Street. Interior work only, as applied for, is approved. 235 South 10th Street. The drawings are approved as a rehabilitation for a commercial property. No plaque will be awarded. Alder, Warnock, Spruce to Irving Streets, "Jefferson Village". A preliminary proposal. It was recommended that the Commission reiterate its position in regard to full restoration and ask the builder to submit proper drawings, one for each certified building involved. He shall also bethanked for taking the trouble involved in an undertaking of this scope. PROBLEMS 274 South Third Street. Conflicting information and the lack of data in the file made it necessary to defer recommendations until the site could be visited by Messrs. Paterson and Lloyd, who agreed to do this on Friday, 24 January. NOTE: The report received, it was recommended that the architect view the doors at 263 S. 4th, 279 S. 4th and 209 Spruce Street, all of which are appropriate for the period of 274 South Third Street. 417 Spruce Street. It is the consensus that, contrary to the owner's effort to propr otherwise, this is an 1840 facade and recent interior alterations bear out this opinion. It is, therefore, recommended that the restoration be to that period, of which this is a good example; that any other treatment will produce an obvious hybrid. PLAQUES REQUESTED The Academy of Music. The request is hereby confirmed. 123 West Highland Avenue. A plaque for this is deferred until authorised generally for houses of this period. 236 Spruce Street. Authorisation is deferred until a photograph is at hand showing the work completed correctly. 202 West Rittenhouse Square, the Church House of the Diocese of Pennsylvania. The Executive Assistant to the Bishop has written, asking for a statement from the Historical Commission on its position in regard to possible replacement of this certified building by a new structure more spacious and convenient at some unspecified future date.
