REPORT OF THE HISTORIC VALUES COMMITTEE February 27, 1968 The Historic Values Committee met on February 27, 1968 at 3 o'clock. Present: Dr. Roy Franklin Nichols, Chairman and Dr. Margaret B. Tinkcom. The Committee was gratified to receive the following letter from the President of the Philadelphia Saving Fund Society. Dr. Roy Franklin Nichols, Chairman Philadelphia Historical Commission 1312 City Hall Annex Philadelphia, Penn 19107 Dear Roy: It was with great gratification that I read your letter of February 6th to our Trustees at their monthly Board meeting today. Happily, we have pictures of the three PSFS buildings described in your letter as having been certified by the Philadelphia Historical Commission as worthy of preservation, and these were put on easels in our Board Room so that the Trustees could get a better idea of their appearance and design. The Board of Trustees has asked me to express its deep appreciation of the sentiments expressed in your letter and for the honor which your Commission has conferred on PSFS in certifying the Philadelphia Saving Fund Building as worthy of preservation. In addition, I would like to convey to you my personal appreciation for your Commission's recognition of what I believe to be one of the outstanding contributions to the skyline of Philadelphia. Since it was completed some 15 years before I came to PSFS, I feel I can say this without appearing to be completely devoid of objectivity! Sincerely, Stew [HANDWRITTEN NOTES: At the bottom of the page, there is a handwritten notation in parentheses that reads "(continued)" in cursive script.] Historic Values Committee Report 2 February 27, 1968 Head House - Custodian: The Committee was distressed to learn that Captain Cavanaugh, who has been custodian of the Head House since its restoration, may no longer be employed there. In view of the problems of vandalism throughout the city and taking into consideration the cost to the city of the fine restoration done on the Head House and the New Market, the Commission regrets any decision to leave this building unguarded. It might also be pointed out that the relations between Captain Cavanaugh and the Society Hill community have been excellent. In accordance with established procedure the text of the tablet to be affixed to the south side of the east portal of City Hall by the Welsh Society should have been submitted to this committee for review.
