D R A F T ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING, 22 June 1967 Present: Mr. George K. Trautwein, Chairman Mr. Richmond P. Miller Mr. John F. Lloyd for the Redevelopment Authority Mr. Erling H. Pedersen for Old Philadelphia Development Corp Dr. Margaret B. Tinkcom, Historian Mrs. Charles J. Maurer, Secretary SUBMISSIONS 317 S. 11th Street. Dr. Larry Hoffman, president of the fraternity house which owns this building was present to review the problems attending upon the restoration of this building and submit another drawing for the door and shutters. The double door was approved The Chairman thanked Dr. Hoffman for coming and excused him. 231/125t Rodman Street. This submission was reviewed as a preliminary drawing and the developer is to be asked to verify the following points in another drawing, as it is difficult to judge from this one what work on the facade is intended. Is a new door intended? If so, please show profiles of the moldings. We note that the building had shutters. If new shutters are to be hung, these must relate to the panels of the door on the first floor, be lowered above. Show that the cornice is to be repaired, or if to be replaced, then the existing contours must be reproduced. The preliminary drawing does not show a cellar bulkhead. Is this to be repaired, reproduced, or eliminated and replaced by a cellar window, if that is what was there originally? The missing railing should be replaced. Please submit the design. It may be simple, but should be wrought iron. 1110;18;1122-28 Rodman Street. The developer shall be commended for his good preliminary submission. The Commission wants working drawings that spell out the following points: New doors are intended? If so, please provide profiles of all moldings. This applies to shutters. Note that the photographs indicate that there were shutters to all the windows. If a plaque is to be requested, these must be in place. Kindly indicate whether the brick is to be repainted or cleaned; verbal agreement is insufficient information. Repair all possible door and window frames and all other exterior original fabric, such as steps, railings &c. The Commission, after inspection by Mr. Lloyd, reluctantly approved this request since no plans were submitted on which to base approval of the restoration. Before letters authorizing the purchase of a plaque are sent, the owner shall be asked to send a 5 x 7" photograph for the Commission's files. 1037, 1039 Lombard Street. The letter and small snapshot show the work to be nearly finished but not yet completed. A 5 x 7 print must preceed any authorization and this will be again reviewed when this is at hand. PROBLEMS The secretary reviewed the policy in force between the Commission and Queen Village, Inc. and reported on several instances where this has seemed not to work well. Mr. Lloyd commented that although the present system of reviewing a letter with photograph affixed is sufficient evi- dence of what is proposed as far as the Commission is concerned, it does not give the contractor enough information and allows him to im- provise and to change original fabric at will. It was his opinion that working drawings would prevent the many misunderstandings that have recently arisen and resulting criticism would be avoided if the Corporation submitted drawings. It was resolved that such a proposition be set before Queen Village Inc in an informal letter from the secretary. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:20 P.M. Respectfully submitted George K. Trautwein, Chairman
