I'm Joan Nachmani. I'm the Director of the Nutrition Education Program for the School District and have worked very closely with the beverage policy as of July 2004 and worked in actually drafting a snack policy which addressed fat issues as well. Unfortunately, we were a little proactive or, should I say, fortunately we were proactive in trying to develop a snack policy and pass that through the District and set snack standards, one being total fat and saturated. At the 98 1/25/07 - PUBLIC HEALTH - BILL 060958 time in 2004, trans fat was not in the forefront of the news, and labeling issues were not addressed as well with trans fat content, but what I would like to say is as part of our wellness policy that we've established as of the beginning of this school year, which was mandated across the country, we have rolled our beverage policy, which you're well aware of, our snack policy standards in there, as well as nutrition education standards, health standards, physical activity standards into an approved policy by the District, and in that policy we will review and make adjustments in the snack standards with total fat, saturated fat listed there as seven grams or less for total fat per serving, two grams or less for saturated fast per serving, and hopefully make an amendment in that policy for trans fats as well, that we will try to eliminate the use of trans fats in our wellness policy and state that in the policy. 99 1/25/07 - PUBLIC HEALTH - BILL 060958
You will probably discuss that again when the School Board comes before Council in the spring.
Just thank you for that pleasant surprise from the School District of Philadelphia. And I know that you work on it and make it effective. We'll work together with the Chair of this Committee and I on making sure that whatever you need and information, whatever it takes for you to implement a trans fat free cafeteria in our school system. Thank you so much.
You're quite 100 1/25/07 - PUBLIC HEALTH - BILL 060958 welcome. Thank you.
I simply wanted to go on record to say a huge thank you to the School District for taking a very aggressive position with regards to the sodas in the schools and just acted very aggressively in response to, as I said, local bottlers who had other views about this, and simply to put that on the record. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much. There being no other testimony, this hearing is adjourned.
