Good afternoon. The City Council hearings on school violence before Joint Committees on Education and Public Safety held on February 8th and today, May 31st, is called into order. This is pursuant to City Council Resolution 051205, adopted December 15, 2005, and 051182, adopted December 8, 2005. We will ask the Clerk to read the title of this resolution.
Resolution 051205, calling for the Committee on Education to conduct hearings on the incidence of violence in Philadelphia schools and explore ways in which violence in schools can be reduced; and Resolution 051182, resolution 20 authorizing City Council's Committee on Public Safety to hold hearings to identify and record what comprehensive, holistic measures are being employed to reduce and prevent violence, particularly gun related violence, which include, in 3 5/31/06 - EDUCATION - RES. 051205 & 051182 addition to anti-gun violence legislation, various educational, mental health, social, economic, cultural programs and strategies.
Thank you very much. The Chair notes that a quorum is here. To my left, Councilman Darrell Clarke. To his left, Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown. To my right, Councilwoman Donna Miller, who is Chair of Public Safety. To her right, Councilwoman Joan Krajewski, and to her right, Councilman Michael A. Nutter. Are there any statements from members of the Committee? (No response.)
I would like to ask for a motion that we adopt and approve receipt of all the statements and transcripts -- and testimony, is the right word, the testimony that we received at our last hearing date, because we neglected to ask 4 5/31/06 - EDUCATION - RES. 051205 & 051182 that all transcripts, all testimony that we receive be adopted into Committee in entirety on that date. May I have a motion?
It's been moved and seconded that all of the testimony we received on the date of our last hearing be adopted. I would now like to entertain a motion that this Joint Committee received and approved this Committee report that we received dealing with this issue. It is a detailed document. We have testimony from many people who testified. We have tried to prepare it in a way that will be acceptable and that we would like the full Council to adopt it, but at this point, we're asking for the Joint Committees to adopt it. May I have a motion?
So moved. (Duly seconded.) 5 5/31/06 - EDUCATION - RES. 051205 & 051182
It's been moved and seconded that the Joint Council groups -- I'm sorry. We're rushing. That both Committees on Education and Public Safety adopt and approve our receipt of this school violence report. All in favor will say aye. (Aye.)
The ayes have it, and so it is adopted. I thank you very much. Thank you.
