To give our invocation this morning, the Chair welcomes the Reverend Larry Marcus, Pastor of Greater Faith Baptist Church and also President of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Philadelphia and Vicinity. Shall we pray. Our Father and our God, we come today with hearts of gratitude and thanksgiving. You have graciously given us access to another day. We thank you for including us as a part of your agenda for this day. As this Council prepares to discuss, deliberate, and handle the business of this City, keep each one of them mindful of their stewardship to you. Grant unto them and their staff wisdom and knowledge to make prudent and wise decisions. I see we have Councilman Nutter also joining Councilmembers. We have three Councilmen honoring an all-girls school. (Laughter.)
Thank you. Thank you, Madam President. A resolution designating the January 28, 2001 through February 2, 2001 as Catholic Schools Week in the City of Philadelphia. Whereas, the members of the Philadelphia City Council stand in tribute to the more than 100,000 students and teachers throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia who celebrate Catholic Schools Week with a variety of religious, social, and recreational activities under the theme, Beyond These Walls a Tradition of Excellence; and Whereas, the first Catholic school in Philadelphia was established in 1782 at Saint Mary's Parrish laying the foundation for what would become a model school system that was replicated throughout the country, and by 1850 there was a Catholic school 00007 in nearly every City parrish; and Whereas, the early schools struggled and survived the anti-Catholic sentiments and even the riots of the 1840s. They expanded and improved under the strong leadership of Saint John Newman and his successors, all advocates of a Catholic school system that has installed high moral values and established rigorous standards of educational excellence; and
Whereas, Catholic schools of Philadelphia prove themselves to be blueprints for success. Current figures indicate that nearly 85 percent of Catholic school graduates attend college and that another 6 percent attend technical and trade schools. These graduates continue to contribute to the social enrichment, moral stability, and economic security of Philadelphia and the region. Graduates of Catholic school have held every elective office possible in the City of Philadelphia; and Whereas, this year we especially recognize Saint Maria Goretti High School for Girls, founded in 1955 and currently representing 25 parishes throughout the City. Since the high school 00008 is located so close to Center City, the students have easy access to the cultural, business, and educational opportunities offered by this most diverse community. Further along with rigorous academic training, the young women absorb the highest ideals and deepest values of Catholic education. We are persuaded that this outstanding school stresses the dignity and worth of the individual, the love of God, educational excellence, and spiritual and moral values; and
Whereas, thus do the students bring pride to their families, distinction to the school, and confidence in their futures. Now, therefore, resolved by the Council of the City of Philadelphia that we proudly designate the week of January 28, 2001 through February 2 as Catholic Schools Week in this City. In fitting tribute to the Catholic schools whose high standards of excellence of educated individuals from all economic, social, ethnic and religious backgrounds these schools have enhanced the lives of their students and families for 219 years. Further resolved, and engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Monsignor Philip J. 00009 Cribben, secretary of Catholic Education for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Sister Sheila Foy, IHM, president of Saint Maria Goretti High School for girls, and Jane M. Peligreno, principal of the school. We present this resolution as evidence of the high esteem and deep respect of this legislative body. Thank you very much. (Applause.)

On behalf of all the students enrolled in 95 parrish elementary schools and 11 diocesan Catholic high schools located within the City of Philadelphia, I wish to thank you for the recognition that you're giving to our schools as we celebrate Catholic Schools Week. Each year it's a great joy for us to see you recognize in particular one special school, and this year, Saint Maria Goretti, the school that has done tremendous things in incorporating technology into the classroom and they've been recognized nationally for doing that. So thanks very much for the recognition you've given to all of 00010 our schools, in particular, to Saint Maria Goretti. (Applause.)

As we wait for our sorors to join us, I would say on a personal 00011 note that I am absolutely pleased and delighted to stand amongst a group of sisters who we're all members of an organization with a rich tradition and has public service as our banner. And I would be remiss to mention that my co-chair, the freshman caucus, W. Wilson Goode, two of his sisters are also Deltas, and he forgot to where his red tie today. (Laughter.)
Finally, I'll say to my good friend David Heiman that, yes, we are wearing red for ourselves, and some might for the Phillies. (Laughter.)
Honoring and commending Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, for their dedication to providing services and programs that promote human welfare. Whereas, Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated, is a private non-profit organization of over 195,000 predominately African-American college-educated women with more than 850 chapters located in the United States, Japan, Germany, England, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti, Liberia, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and 00012 Whereas, their major programs such as -or our major programs such as sorority economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement are based upon the organization's five-point programmatic thrust; and Whereas, the sorors provide a cowdry of public services through the five-point programmatic thrust, including but not limited to voter registration and education, adopt a school, Delta Habitat for Humanity, Delta Days and the state and national capitals, Delta Academy and clinical depression; and Whereas, a state-wide founders weekend was held on Friday, January 19 through Sunday, January 21, 2001 which was co-hosted by Philadelphia Alumni, Valley Forge Alumni, Quaker City Alumni, and Chester Alumni chapters. The event held at the Crown Plaza Hotel, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, celebrated the birth of the sorority by its illustrious founders in 1913. More than 200 sorors were in attendance; and.
Whereas, local 00013 chapters includes such notables as the great jurist and philanthropist, the late Wyneta Kidd-Stout; prominent educator and school board member Dorothy Rush; Media personalities Monique Braxton and Joyce Evens; former Commerce Director and City representative Jerry Walker; SEPTA assistant general manager, Frances M. Jones; Deputy City Commissioner Linda Watson; former superintendent of schools, Constance Clayton; Philadelphia chapter president Rita Waters; Councilwomen Blondell Reynolds-Brown and Marian B. Tasco, and many other skilled and talented leaders of this City who are too numerous to mention that are here. Now, therefore, be it resolved by the Council of the City of Philadelphia that it hereby honors and commends Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, for their excellent work and dedication to services and programs which promote human welfare. Resolved further than an engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the women of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority as evidence of the sincere admiration and gratitude of this legislative body for the many years of dedicated service they have provided for the communities of Philadelphia 00014 and beyond, and especially to Councilwoman Reynolds-Brown and Marian Tasco. And resolution 010022 entitled, resolution approving the Eagles lease and development agreement between the Philadelphia Eagles Limited Partnership and Philadelphia Authority for Industrial Development for the Eagles football stadium project, respectfully reports it has considered the same and returns the attached resolutions to Council with a favorable recommendation.
