Good morning. This is the Committee of Labor and Civil Service. I am Councilman Juan Ramos, Chairman of the Committee. Please note also in attendance are Councilman W. Wilson Goode, Vice-Chairman of the Committee, along with Councilman Greenlee, and Council President Ann Verna has joined us for a quorum. We have a quorum, so we may begin. An ordinance 15 amending Title 22 of The Philadelphia Code, entitled "Public Employees Retirement Code," by amending Section 18 22-1303, entitled "Exemption from Attachment," to change the list of designated payees to whom a member, survivor or beneficiary may direct deductions from benefits payments, all under certain terms and conditions.
I would like to call Dorothea Wilson of People 3 10/31/07 - LABOR - BILL 070790 Coordinated for AFSCME District Council 47. Good morning. Please state your name for the record and proceed with your testimony.
Good morning. My name is Dorothea Sea, S-E-A, Wilson, President District Council 47 retirees.
AFSCME District Council 47 is in support of this addition because many of our retired members have been waiting to have a deduction taken from their retirement benefits which would be directed to the political action arm of our union. When these men and women were active members of the union, they believed in the desirability of involvement in the political system. They saw that their actions and contributions made a difference in the type of people who were elected to 4 10/31/07 - LABOR - BILL 070790 office. As retired senior citizens, they want to continue their political involvement and understand that by contributing a portion of their pension, they will maintain their voices in the political process. Our support of this amendment is both an example and the result of a concerted, grassroots demand from our retirees to continue to have their views heard and recognized by those in power. Thank you.
