And it won't be brief. Mr. President, at this time I would like to introduce the Philadelphia Children's Ballet Academy. And they will perform excerpts from the Nutcracker Suite. And that just shows you that DiCicco is not the only cultural Councilperson here. I also have some cultural. I have been scurrying through my district looking for culture, and this is as cultural as it gets.

They were absolutely beautiful. Our first presentation today honors Jerome Shestack. To make this presentation, the Chair appoints Councilwoman Fernandez. The Chair invites Mr. Shestack to come to receive this Resolution.
This Resolution is commending and honoring Jerome J. Shestack, Esquire, for his outstanding achievements as a Philadelphia lawyer and for the distinction of being elected President of the American Bar Association. Whereas, as far back as his days in Harvard Law School, Jerry Shestack was creating a track record of battling for the rights of the disenfranchised when he argued for the inclusion of women in the student body; Soon thereafter, during his tenure as a young law professor at Louisiana State, he successfully championed the right of PRESENTATIONS African-Americans to earn a law degree at LSU; And whereas, in the 1950s, Jerry Shestack, as First Deputy City Solicitor, fought to open up places of public accommodation in Philadelphia to all races, and worked tirelessly to bring diversification to the municipal work force; And whereas, the, quote, Pied Piper of Just Causes, end quote, as he was named by an American Bar Association publication, he founded and chaired the ABA Section of Individual Rights, through which those who are discriminated against, or who are underprivileged, have gained the assistance of the ABA in protecting their liberties; And whereas, he was appointed by President Carter as the UN Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, where he spearheaded the United Nations' working group on disappearances, which faced the challenge of championing the rights of those who had, quote, disappeared due to the oppressive tactics of their government; And whereas, as the new President of the American Bar Association, Jerry Shestack, a man of exemplary ideals and convictions, is now guiding PRESENTATIONS a 380,000-member organization that can positively effect beneficial change in the legal system. Now, therefore, resolved by the Council of the City of Philadelphia that we commend and honor Jerome J. Shestack, Esquire, who continues to serve the citizens of this city and the country with professionalism and dedication that acts as an example to all. Further resolve that an engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Jerome J. Shestack, Esquire, as further evidence of the sincerest sentiments of this legislative body. Jerry, thank you for your work. (Applause.)
The Chair recognizes Mr. Shestack for remarks. JEROME J. SHESTACK, ESQ.: Thank you very much. I am deeply honored by this presentation. My soul has been bound up with this city, and with members of this Council, for almost half a century. In 1952, when the first Home Rule Charter came about, I was a young Assistant City PRESENTATIONS Solicitor. It was a different city then. The city was a segregated city. Places of public accommodation were closed to minorities. Girard College was only for poor white male orphans. I was involved in the struggles and the court fights to change that, in the preservation of the Home Rule Charter. And those were among my proudest days. I had the honor of representing Council President Finnegan and Council President James Tate, Council President Paul Dertona, and Council President Street in more recent days. As we approach the next century, the aims of the American Bar Association are very much similar to the aims that I have heard expressed here: Equal justice, affirmative action, access to the poor, and making liberty and freedom, the attributes of our city, meaningful. I look forward to the renaissance of our city as we enter the 21st Century with hope, aspiration, and with the dedication of the citizens of this city and this Council, and the lawyers of this nation, to make equal justice a reality in our COMMUNICATIONS nation. Thank you very much for this deep honor. (Applause.)
